Jackson Generals News Release
MONTGOMERY, ALA. - Needing a win to clinch the series victory at Riverwalk Stadium, the Jackson Generals fell short of the mark, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Montgomery Biscuits on Friday night. Jackson went 2-for-12 with men in scoring position, but they also allowed a pair of unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the contest. The loss, coupled with a loss by Chattanooga, means the Generals don't make up any ground in the Southern League's North Division race, remaining half a game back of first place with 17 games to go in the First Half.
Generals starter Ryan Atkinson put together back-to-back scoreless innings to begin the game before running into trouble. A leadoff triple and a two-out walk put men on the corners, and Montgomery was able to score thanks to an infield error by the Generals. Atkinson would allow runs in the fourth as well, as the Biscuits put up a single, a full-count walk, a 2-run double, and a sacrifice fly to gain a 4-3 lead. Atkinson finished five innings, and Gabe Speier dealt a clean sixth, but another infield error in the seventh inning allowed a subsequent run for the home side. Daniel Gibson needed only 11 pitches to get through the eighth inning, but the Jackson offense could not come through with the game-tying rally.
After a 14-run effort on Thursday, the Generals' bats were more subdued on Friday, notching only eight hits while collecting four walks. Jamie Westbrook and Jose Vinicio both tripled in the contest, but five different Generals hitters left men in scoring position with two outs. Jackson stranded two men each in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, unable to solve a Biscuits bullpen that pitched six shutout frames. The loss marks the third time in five tries that the Generals have failed to close out an opponent in the fourth game of a series.
