Montero Carries Buffalo to Series Split with PawSox

(Pawtucket, RI) - Buffalo DH Jesus Montero collected three extra-base hits and five RBI in his first three at-bats to lead the Bisons to a 9-1 victory, splitting the season-opening four-game series with the PawSox at McCoy Stadium.
Montero reached on a sun-aided double in the second inning, but Pawtucket starter William Cuevas (0-1) retired the next three hitters to retain an early 1-0 lead.
However, after Darrell Ceciliani walked with the bases loaded to tie the game 1-1 in the next inning, Montero doubled again to clear the bases and put the Bisons ahead 4-1.
In Montero's final at-bat against Cuevas, he lined his first home run of the season just over the fence in the left field corner. The two-out, two-run shot gave Buffalo (2-2) a 6-1 lead in the fifth.
On the other side, it was Christian Vazquez who did the most damage at the plate for the PawSox (2-2). He went 3-for-4, ripping singles in his first three at-bats. He drove home Pawtucket's lone run of the game in the first inning with a single to right. He also hit the ball hard in his final at-bat in the eighth inning, but his line drive was picked off by a sprawling Casey Kotchman at first base.
Vazquez is hitting .667 (6-for-9) in his first three games of the season. He has reached base three out of four times in each of those contests for a .750 on-base percentage.
Buffalo starter Wade LeBlanc (1-0) pitched well in his Bisons debut, allowing just the one run on four hits in 5.0 innings. Four pitchers out of the Buffalo bullpen each tossed a scoreless inning, allowing three total hits.
Jorge Marban, Pat Light and Kyle Martin all made their season debuts for Pawtucket in relief of Cuevas.
The PawSox will being a series tomorrow evening against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at 6:15 pm. Pawtucket lefthander Brian Johnson (0-0, -.--) is scheduled to face Scranton lefthander Tyler Olson (0-0, -.--).
Tomorrow will be the initial "My Hero Monday" at McCoy Stadium, as the PawSox will honor Newport, RI native Heather Abbott, who lost her leg in the Boston Marathon bombings on Patriots Day, 2013.
