Montero, Bisons Bust out for 9-1 Win

April 10, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Jesus Montero had four hits and five RBI as the Bisons pounded the PawSox, 9-1, Sunday afternoon from McCoy Stadium. Casey Kotchman and Junior Lake added two hits each as the Herd earned a four-game series split from Rhode Island.

Three of Montero's four hits went for extra bases, none bigger than a bases-clearing double in the third inning that gave Buffalo the lead. The Herd loaded the bases on a single, a fielding error and a walk and pulled even with the PawSox at one when Darrell Ceciliani drew a second free pass to force in Alexi Casilla. Two pitches later, Montero pulled a 0-1 pitch inside the bag at third base and into the left field corner to plate three runs

In the fifth, Montero added to his impressive day with his first Bisons' home run, a missile into the left field corner that was just high enough to clear the wall by the 325 mark. The two-run shot gave Montero five RBI on the day.

Buffalo added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning before Montero singled and scored in the ninth to cap his impressive day. Montero began the game with a double in the first inning and ended the afternoon with a .429 average.

The recipient of the Bisons' offensive outburst was lefty Wade LeBlanc. Making his Herd debut, LeBlanc scattered four hits and two walks to only allow one run over five innings. He retired seven of the last eight batters he faced and nine of 12 after his teammates gave him the lead.

The PawSox scored in the first inning on Christian Vazquez's single to right field, but Kotchman's heads up play stopped a bigger rally before it could get started. While Pawtucket's Marco Hernandez was scoring from second on the play, Kotchman cut Domonic Brown's throw and relayed to Casilla at second base to retire Vazquez and clear the bases.

The Bisons bullpen nailed down the win with Ben Rowen, Ryan Tepera, Pat Venditte and Dustin Antolin all working an inning of shutout relief. The PawSox had just three hits after the fifth inning.

Buffalo will now travel to Syracuse for a three-game series with the Chiefs in front of Thursday's home opener at Coca-Cola Field.

BISONS NOTES:

Wade LeBlanc is the third Bisons' starter to allow one run in five innings in a start this season. Drew Hutchison struck out nine in his outing Friday night and Scott Diamond repeated the feat in his victory on Saturday...Switch pitcher Pat Venditte threw for the second time this season, but again only needed to use his right arm to retire the side. He pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning...Darrell Ceciliani stole the Bisons first base of the season with a swipe of second in the fifth inning.
