Seventh Inning Rally Sends Norfolk Past Gwinnett, 9-4

NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Tides (1-3) rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capturing a come-from-behind 9-4 win over the Gwinnett Braves (3-1) on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the four-game series at Harbor Park.

After falling behind 2-0 to the Tides in the bottom of the third inning, Gwinnett surged ahead with a four-run top of the fourth against Norfolk starter Terry Doyle. Daniel Castro laced a one-out single to center and moved to third on a double by Tyler Moore. Ryan Lavarnway dropped a single into left, scoring both Castro and Moore to knot the game at 2-2. A double to left by Rio Ruiz put runners again on second and third, and Sean Kazmar Jr. cleared the bases with a double to left, sending the G-Braves ahead 4-2.

Norfolk cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the fourth against reliever Danny Burawa. With the bases loaded and none out, former G-Brave Joey Terdoslavich grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score the run.

The bottom of the seventh inning proved fatal for the G-Braves. Lefty Ian Krol opened the inning and allowed back-to-back singles to Terdoslavich and Dariel Alvarez. Madison Younginer entered from the bullpen, and after striking out pinch-hitter L.J. Hoes, he walked Steve Tolleson to load the bases. Audry Perez then drilled a double to left, scoring a pair for a 5-4 Tides' lead. Michael Almanzar followed with another two-run double, raising the lead to 7-4. After an infield single by Paul Janish and a walk to Hoes reloaded the bases, Christian Walker capped the scoring with a two-run single to left.

Tyrell Jenkins made his first start of the year for Gwinnett and worked 3.0 innings with two earned runs on three hits, five walks and four strikeouts. Burawa went 2.0 innings with one hit, one earned run, three walks and one strikeout. Krol (L, 0-1) pitched 1.0 inning with two hits, two earned runs and one strikeout. Younginer worked 1.0 inning with four hits, four earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Brandon Cunniff turned in a scoreless bottom of the eighth with one hit and one walk.

Doyle gave the Tides 6.0 innings of work, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and four walks. Left-hander Zach Phillips (W, 1-1) earned the win with 1.0 scoreless inning that included three strikeouts. Pedro Beato and Oliver Drake pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

At the plate, the G-Braves were led by Castro and Lavarnway, who each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Lavarnway added two RBIs. Kazmar Jr. was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Perez had the hot hand at the plate for Norfolk, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and four RBIs.

The G-Braves continue their season-opening road trip on Monday night with game one of a three-game series at Durham. Right-hander Casey Kelly (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Gwinnett, while the Bulls will counter with left-hander Adam Wilk (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch at Durham Bulls Athletic Park is set for 7:05 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:35 p.m.
