April 7, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Monterey Bay FC News Release
SEASIDE, Calif. - Following last night's draw, Monterey Bay F.C. announces that the Club's third round matchup against Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Jose Earthquakes in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will take place on Tuesday, April 25 at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT and will be one of eight matches selected to air exclusively on the Bleacher Report App and B/R Football Youtube channel.
Monterey Bay F.C. Season Ticket Holders will be given exclusive first access to tickets for the match at the Cardinale Stadium box office beginning at 2 p.m. this Saturday, April 8 and will be available only to Season Ticket Holders through Tuesday, April 11. Tickets will then go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, April 12 at noon.
This exciting matchup with San Jose will be the Union's second U.S. Open Cup match this season following the team's exciting 3-1 win in extra time in Fresno against Central Valley Fuego FC on April 5 that advanced Monterey Bay F.C. to the third round. The Earthquakes are one of 18 MLS teams entering the mix in the third round, with winners advancing to the round of 32 that will see eight additional MLS sides join the fray and is slated for May 9-10.
Similar to England's famous FA Cup, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship. Now in its 108th edition, it is a single-elimination tournament that has crowned a champion every year since 2014. The history-filled tournament is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
The winner of the 2023 U.S. Open Cup will receive $300,000 in prize money and an automatic berth in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League tournament, akin to Europe's well-known annual Champions League and Europa League tournaments.
