Monsters Top Checkers 3-2 for Third Straight Win
October 29, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 on Thursday at The Q in the first of eight meetings between the two teams this season. With the win, the Monsters' third consecutive victory, Lake Erie improved to 4-1-0-1 overall this season and with 9 points and a .750 points percentage, moved into first place alone in the AHL's Central Division standings.
In the first period, the Monsters broke out of a four-game slump on the power-play at 5:39 of the frame when Markus Hannikainen ping-ponged his second goal of the season past Charlotte goaltender Drew MacIntyre thanks to feeds from Kerby Rychel and Sonny Milano.
In the middle frame, the Checkers tied the game at one with a Brody Sutter goal at 13:12, but the Monsters scratched across a pair of late-period scores, from Oleg Yevenko at 14:57, assisted by Ryan Craig, and Rychel at 18:35, set up by Hannikainen and T.J. Tynan, both at even-strength, to skate into the second intermission with a 3-1 advantage. Yevenko's goal was his first professional tally.
Charlotte's Trevor Carrick potted the third period's lone goal at 7:36, but a stout effort from Lake Erie goaltender Anton Forsberg down the stretch denied the Checkers a final frame comeback. Forsberg improved to 3-1-0 this season by virtue of a 31-save performance, while MacIntyre took the loss for the Checkers despite 27 stops.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday rematch vs. the Checkers at The Q on Halloween with full coverage underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
