CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League were defeated by the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night at The Q >[if gte vml 1]>
by a final score of 5-4 in overtime. With the loss, the Monsters drop to 10-7-3-0 overall this season and with 23 points, move into a tie for second place with the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL's North Division standings.
The Marlies got on the board quickly, scoring 34 seconds into the first period thanks to an even-strength finish from Dmytro Timashov as Toronto jumped in front, 1-0. Moments later, Kevin Stenlund evened the score, 1-1, potting home his sixth goal of the season for the Monsters at 2:08 on feeds from Alex Broadhurst and Nathan Gerbe. Toronto, however, reclaimed the lead, 2-1, when Rasmus Sandin scored on the power-play, giving the Marlies a one-goal edge heading into the first intermission.
Cleveland tied things up once again, 2-2, in the middle frame when Eric Robinson tallied his ninth goal of the season, an even-strength finish at 9:18 with assists from Paul Bittner and Zac Dalpe. The Monsters claimed their first lead of the night at 15:54 when Justin Scott scored on feeds from Robinson and Adam Clendening, to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead at the end of two periods.
Toronto's Adam Brooks opened the final frame with an even-strength marker to pull the Marlies even with the Monsters, 3-3. Cleveland answered when Dalpe tallied his 13th goal of the season, a short-handed marker at 12:48 of the third period to give Cleveland the advantage, 4-3. The Marlies responded quickly, however, getting a power-play goal from Trevor Moore to even the contest, 4-4.
In overtime, Chris Mueller tipped in an even-strength finish to secure a 5-4 win for Toronto.
Cleveland goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks stopped 28 of 33 shots to drop to 2-1-1 on the season, while Marlies netminder Eamon McAdam stopped 28 of the 32 pucks he faced, to improve to 4-0-3 on the year.
