Despite coming back to tie the score late in the second period, the Lake Erie Monsters (12-11-0-1) fell short by a 4-2 score Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena against the Rochester Americans (11-10-2-2). Mark Olver and Paul Carey each scored for the Monsters, who have lost consecutive games. The Monsters and Rochester meet again Friday in the Frozen Frontier game; an outdoor game in Rochester at 7:05 PM.
Jamie Tardif scored for Rochester to cap off a two-on-one rush 11 seconds into the hockey game, giving the Americans a 1-0 lead. On the heels of a Rochester power play, the Americans were able to net a second goal when Kevin Porter scored on a low shot from the high slot at 16:08 of the first period. The Americans took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
With the Monsters on the power play, Andrew Agozzino spotted Mark Olver cutting to the net, and Olver took the pass and snapped a shot from the slot past Rochester goalie Matt Hackett to pull the Monsters to within a goal at 7:41 of the second period. The goal was the fourth of the season for Olver, and cut Rochester's lead to 2-1. Matt Hunwick also assisted on the goal.
Paul Carey tied the game on a wraparound goal at 18:35 of the second period making the score 2-2. Carey took a puck from Colin Smith behind the net, cut to the right post, and quickly slipped the puck over the goal line before Hackett could arrive to make a save. Bryan Lerg also assisted on the goal; Carey's fourth of the season.
The score wasn't tied long, however. Rochester's Mike Zigomanis scored on a shot from the high slot at 19:31 of the second period to put Rochester back on top by a goal, 3-2.
Rochester regained a two-goal lead when Tardif netted his second goal of the game- a penalty shot goal- eight seconds into the third period, leaving the score 4-2.
