Cleveland Monsters News Release
ONTARIO, CA - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Ontario Reign in overtime on Wednesday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA by a final score of 3-2. With the overtime setback, the Monsters are now 20-32-5-3 overall this season and with a .400 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Reign posted a 1-0 lead on Wednesday with the first period's lone goal, a power-play tally from T.J. Hensick at 9:43 of the frame. In the middle stanza, Garett Cockerill's first AHL score, an even-strength marker assisted by Alex Broadhurst and Terry Broadhurst at 0:32, tied the game at one for Cleveland before the Monsters claimed their first lead at 2-1 with a five-on-five finish from Ryan Kujawinski at 2:17 of the frame that came courtesy of Calvin Thurkauf's lone feed. Mid-way through the second, the Reign fought back to tie the game at two, however, with an even-strength breakaway conversion from Austin Wagner at 9:09.
After a scoreless third period, Hensick, a former Monsters star from 2007-10, ended the game 2:58 into a three-on-three overtime period to help the Reign claim a 3-2 victory. Cleveland net-minder Jeff Zatkoff is now 2-4-2 this season despite a strong, 31-save showing on Wednesday, while Ontario backstop Cal Petersen improved to 19-10-1 this year by virtue of a 30-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Friday road clash vs. the Texas Stars with full coverage, live from H-E-B Center at Cedar Park in Cedar Park, TX, underway at 8:30 pm on Alt 99.1 and the Monsters Hockey Network.
