Monster 8th Inning Leads Mountaineers over Mainers

July 5, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

MONTPELIER, V.T - The game seemed to be in hand for the Sanford Mainers (9-12), up 5-2 in 8th inning, with a man away. Two thirds of an inning later, with the smoke cleared, the Vermont Mountaineers (7-13) had taken a late 9-5 lead.

Joe Tietjan (North Carolina Asheville) hit a solo home run with a man away to left field which made it 5-3. Vermont's Mikael Mogues (Seton Hall) followed Tietjan and struck out on a ball in the dirt which got all of the way to the backstop, putting him aboard. After a single to put two men on, defending NECBL Player of the Week Troy Scoccia (Fairfield) tripled to bring in both runners, with Scocca himself scoring due to a throwing error to take the lead 6-5.

Ultimately, the Mountaineers would score seven runs, on seven hits, a hit-by-pitch and two errors in the inning, facing three different Sanford pitchers over the course of their rally.

Prior to the rally, the Mainers were in seemingly good shape. Sanford got a solid start from Cole Whitney (St. John's) who went four-and-two-thirds, allowed two hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and six strikeouts. Joe Orlando (Binghamton) provided two-and-a-third innings of solid relief as well.

The Mainers dropped a five-spot on the board in the 6th, a rally that accounted for almost all of Sanford's offense on the night. With a man down, Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) and Todd Czinege (Villanova) hit back-to-back doubles, scoring one run. A batter later Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) hit a two-run home run to leftfield, his first of the season to score two more which at the time gave Sanford a 3-2 lead.

Later in the inning, Danny Wilson (North Carolina Asheville) was doubled in by Johnny Slater (Michigan) who reached third on throwing error. Ako Thomas (Michigan) knocked in his springtime to teammate with a triple to cap the Mainers scoring for the night.

The Mainers will look for payback tomorrow, July 6 at home when they play host to the Mountaineers at Goodall Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with pregame action beginning on the NECBL Broadcast Network and CBS Sports 1240 WSKI at 6:20 PM.
