July 5, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
The Vermont Mountaineers picked up their fifth straight home win on Tuesday night, as they topped the Sanford Mainers 9-5 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
Vermont rallied from behind in the eighth inning, when they tacked on seven runs, leading them to victory.
Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) got Vermont started in the eighth with a solo home run. That was followed by an RBI triple off the bat of the Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield), who then scored on a throwing error by the cut-off man. Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) then singled and scored on a dropped third strike. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky./Louisville) knocked an RBI single one batter later, driving in Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook). Little then came around to score on an error by the Mainers' catcher.
Vermont got a good start out of Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich./Eastern Michigan), who went five innings allowing no runs on five hits. The righty walked two and struck out one.
Sanford's Cole Whitney (Campbell Hall, N.Y./St. John's) went four and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out six and walking two.
The Mountaineers also got offense in the third inning when DH Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion) blasted a solo homer over the right field wall. Catcher Slade Heggen walked and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Trevor Ezell.
Sanford's offense came alive to score five runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to get past Vermont. Back-to-back doubles by Nelson Mompierre (Miami, Fla./Miami Dade College Kendall) and Todd Czinege (Overland Park, K.S./Villanova) put the Mainers on the board before Mike Landestoy (Fort Worth, Texas/Texas Christian) knocked a two run home run to give them the lead. Danny Wilson (Hampstead, N.C./UNC Asheville) then walked and scored on an RBI double by Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich./Michigan). Wilson then scored on an RBI triple by Ako Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Michigan) to cap the offense in the inning.
Reliever Fitzpatrick Stadler (Glenview, Ill./Arizona St.) got the win for Vermont after coming in and throwing two and one third innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits.
Blaise Whitman (Salisbury, Mass./Rhode Island) suffered the loss for the Mainers, moving him to 2-1 on the season. Whitman allowed three runs on three hits.
Vermont and Sanford will face off again on Wednesday when the Mountaineers will travel to Goodall Park, and look for their third straight win. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
