March 24, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Las Vegas Gladiators News Release
Las Vegas, NV, March 24, 2005 â Monday night football will make its second appearance in Las Vegas this week as the Las Vegas Gladiators (5-3, 2-1) welcome the defending ArenaBowl Champion San Jose SaberCats (4-3, 1-1) at the Thomas & Mack Center on Monday, March 28, at 7 p.m. PT.
Monday night is traditionally the Day of Atonement when it comes to football and this week will be no different when the SaberCats come to Las Vegas to battle the first-place Gladiators with bragging rights in the Western Division on the line.
After playing just half of the season so far, FB/LB Frank Carter is just four sacks shy of tying the AFL record of 13. Carter's nine sacks this season are two more than his total for his entire career. He was named the Defensive Player of the Mid-Year by AFLWA earlier this week. The current record was set 18 years ago by Craig Walls.
Quarterback Clint Dolezel will most certainly reach a couple of milestones in Monday's game. Dolezel is just 88 yards shy of 30,000 passing yards for his career after throwing for 280 yards last week with nine touchdowns. He is also just four touchdowns shy of 600 for his career, a plateau that only three other quarterbacks have reached (Andy Kelly, Aaron Garcia and Sherdrick Bonner).
The Gladiators' defense is first in the league in scoring and second in the league in yards per game, allowing just 43.6 points per game and 251.6 yards per game. The defense is also second in sacks, dropping opposing quarterbacks 13 times. The Gladiators' also lead the league in sacks allowed with only one for the season.
The last time the two teams met, the SaberCats took care of the Gladiators 66-31 in San Jose on February 5. SaberCats' quarterback Mark Grieb threw six touchdown passes and completed 23-of-31 passes for 275 yards with one interception. San Jose's defense also held the Gladiators scoreless in the second half with help from DS Omarr Smith's 7.5 total tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.
This Monday's game is also Industry Night. Any Las Vegas local who works in a hotel, night club, restaurant, etc. will receive $5 off their ticket price when they show proper identification at the Thomas & Mack Center box office. Appearing on behalf of the Palms Hotel Resort will be Palms Girls' Ruth and Ryan. The girls will be helping on-field promotions and will sign autographs before the game on the concourse.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT and the can be heard on ESPN Radio 920 with Andrew Siciliano and Mike Pritchard calling the game.
