Moncton Wildcats News Release
The Wildcats opened their second round QMJHL playoffs series tonight on the road in Blainville. Going up against this first-place team in the league the Cats were looking to carry over momentum from their game seven win over Rimouski, but came up short this evening.
Within the opening 10 minutes of the game Moncton found themselves shorthanded three times, and with three successful kills the Wildcats were off to a good start holding the top team in the league scoreless on the man advantage.
Moncton was on the board first tonight with a goal by Adam Capannelli, adding his second of the playoffs. Alexander Khovanov drove the net, his shot went off the post and Capannelli found the rebound to burry one for the early lead. Just as the Cats were looking to have some early momentum they would catch a bad break a minute later. While Moncton was on the powerplay Blainville forward Alexander Katerinakis stole the puck and came in on the breakaway, Grametbauer made the save but unfortunately Pelletier was sliding towards the net and the rebound went in off the Wildcats forward's leg to tie the game at 1-1.
With a few bad bounces early, it opened chances for the Armada and they made no mistake capitalizing. With some Moncton turnovers and lost pucks around the net, the Armada were able to break open the scoring gap. After the second Blainville held a 5-1 lead and would continue to add one more in the third to make the final tonight 6-1. Alex Barré-Boulet scored two tonight for the home team, along with Thomas Ethier, Luke Henman and Drake Batherson adding singles.
Matthew Waite was put in nets for the third and stopped eight of his nine shots. Blainville outshot the Wildcats tonight 30-23 tonight and had seven power play opportunities compared to Moncton's four. Grametbauer was solid in nets for Moncton tonight, and the high scoring game was through no fault of his own.
Moncton will be back on the ice in Blainville for game two on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (AST) This game will be broadcasted on Sportsnet 360, and both Sports Rock locations in Moncton will be hosting a watch party as the Wildcats look to rebound in game two!
