LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
@ Portland (11/20): Right wing Tyler Toffoli scored a natural hat trick to lead the Manchester Monarchs past the Portland Pirates, 5-1, at Cumberland County Civic Center in a VIP Cup match-up on Tuesday night. Manchester also received goals from right wing Stefan Legein and defenseman Slava Voynov. Center Evan Brophey scored the lone goal for the Pirates. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (7-5-1) earned his seventh victory of the season stopping 42-of-43 shots. Pirates netminder Chad Johnson (5-5-0) took his fifth loss of the season making 20 saves on 25 shots. Manchester went 1-for-3 on the power play. Portland was 0-for-10 with the man advantage.
vs. Worcester (11/23): The Manchester Monarchs came back from an early 2-0 deficit only to fall in overtime, 4-3, against the Worcester Sharks at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. Manchester registered goals from defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk, defenseman Nick Deslauriers and left wing Jordan Nolan. Worcester tallied goals from center Freddie Hamilton, center Curt Gogol, center Tim Kennedy and left wing John McCarthy. Monarchs netminder Martin Jones (7-6-1) took his sixth loss of the season stopping 28-of-32 shots. Sharks netminder Harri Sateri (1-4-1) earned his first win of the season making 27 saves on 30 shots. Manchester went 1-for-2 on the power play. Worcester was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
@ Springfield (11/24): The Manchester Monarchs scored three first period power play goals and defeated the Springfield Falcons, 4-3, in a shootout at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night. Manchester scored goals off the sticks of defenseman Nick Deslauriers, left wing Tanner Pearson and right wing Tyler Toffoli. Springfield tallied goals from right wing Cam Atkinson, center Jake Hansen and right wing Wade MacLeod. Monarchs goaltender Peter Mannino (2-1-0) earned his second victory of the season stopping 21-of-24 shots in regulation and 3-of-4 shootout attempts. Falcons netminder Curtis McElhinney (9-2-2) took his second shootout loss of the season making 33 saves on 36 shots in regulation and made one save on four shootout snipers. Manchester went 3-for-6 on the power play. Springfield was 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
vs. Portland (11/25): The Manchester Monarchs earned four out of six points this weekend but fell to the Portland Pirates, 3-2, in overtime in the third VIP Cup match-up game of the season at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon. Defenseman Jake Muzzin and right wing Tyler Toffoli scored for the Monarchs. Right wing Chris Brown, defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and defenseman David Rundblad scores for the Pirates. Monarchs netminder Martin Jones (7-7-1) took his seventh loss of the season stopping 47-of-50 shots. Pirates goaltender Chad Johnson (6-5-0) earned his sixth win of the season making 37 saves on 39 shots. Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (9-6-2-1) sit in first place in the Atlantic Division with 21 points. The Worcester Sharks (9-7-1-1) rank second in the division with 20 points. The St. John's IceCaps (9-9-0-1) rank third in the division with 19 points. The Portland Pirates (8-8-1-1) sit in fourth place in the division with 18 points each. The Providence Bruins (7-8-0-1) are in fifth place in division with 15 points.
The Monarchs are 4-2-1-1 on the road and are 5-4-1-0 at home this season.
Manchester earned 6-of-8 possible standings points in four games last week with a record of 2-0-2-0.
The Monarchs snapped a three-game losing streak (0-3-0-0) with a 5-1 win over the Pirates on Tuesday, November 20. Manchester's power play ranks eighth in the American Hockey League with a 20.5% success rate (16-for-78).
The Monarchs tied a season-high scoring three power play goals against the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, November 24. Earlier this season, Manchester scored three power play goals against the IceCaps on Wednesday, November 7.
Manchester leads the VIP Cup rivalry series standings 2-0-1-0 against the Pirates this season with nine more meetings to determine the inaugural series champion.
Right wing Brandon Kozun (5-11=16) leads the team in assists with 11 and points with 16.
Kozun ranks second on the team with five goals.
Kozun has a three-game assist and point streak (0-3=3).
Kozun had a four-game point streak (3-2=5) snapped in a 3-2 loss to the Bruins on Friday, November 16.
Kozun tallied the game-winning goals against the Sharks on Saturday, October 27, against the Binghamton Senators on Sunday, Octo- ber 28 and the IceCaps on Wednesday, November 7.
Kozun leads the team with three game-winning goals this season.
Center Linden Vey (3-10=13) is tied with right wing Tyler Toffoli (9-4=13) for second place on the team in scoring with 13 points each.
Vey is second on the team with 10 assists.
Vey has a three-game assist and point streak (0-7=7) snapped on Sunday, November 25 in a 3-2 overtime loss against the Pirates.
Vey has seven assists in his last four games.
Vey tallied a career-best four assists in the 5-1 victory against the Pirates on Tuesday, November 20.
Vey tallied an assist and the game-winning goal against the Pirates on October 20 for his first multi-point game of the season.
Toffoli leads the team with nine goals this season.
Toffoli tallied his first professional natural hat trick in a 5-1 win over the Pirates on Tuesday, November 20.
Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk (2-8=10) and defenseman Slava Voynov (4-6=10) are tied for fourth on the Monarchs with 10 points each.
Bodnarchuk scored his first goal of the season in a 5-2 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, November 9.
Bodnarchuk leads the team in plus/minus with a plus-7 rating. Bodnarchuk leads the team defensemen with eight assists this season.
In four games against his former team, Bodnarchuk has registered three assists, five shots and a plus-1 rating versus Providence.
Voynov leads the team with 54 shots on goal this season.
Voynov tallied a goal and an assist in his first multi-point game of the season against the Pirates on Saturday, October 20.
Voynov tallied a shorthanded goal in a 5-1 victory over the Sharks on Saturday, October 27.
Center Andrei Loktionov (4-5=9) is in sixth place on the Monarchs with nine points.
Loktionov, Voynov and left wing Tanner Pearson (4-3=7) are tied for third on the team with four goals each.
Loktionov leads the team and is tied for first in the AHL with two shorthanded goals this season.
Pearson registered his first professional goals and points against the Pirates on October 20, registering two goals and an assist in the Monarchs 6-4 victory.
Defenseman Nick Deslauriers (2-6=8) ranks seventh on the Monarchs with eight points.
Deslauriers scored a goal in consecutive games for the first time in his professional career with tallies on Friday, November 23 against the Sharks and Saturday, November 24 against the Falcons.
Defenseman Jake Muzzin (1-6=6) and Pearson are tied for eighth place on the Monarchs with seven points each.
Muzzin tallied his first goal of the season in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Pirates on Sunday, November 25. It was Muzzin's first goal since April 13, 2012.
Defenseman David Kolomatis (3-3=6), left wing Marc-Andre Cliche (2-4=6), left wing Dwight King (1-5=6) and defenseman Thomas Hickey (0-6=6) are tied for 10th place on the Monarchs with six points each.
Kolomatis, Vey andcenter Andy Andreoff (3-1=4) are tied for sixth on the team with three goals each.
All three of Kolomatis' goals this season have come when the team was on a power play. His three power play goals lead the team and are tied for 11th in the AHL.
Cliche appeared in his 300th AHL game (all with the Monarchs) against the Sharks on Friday, November 23.
Cliche ranks third on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 302.
Cliche has scored 60 goals in his career with the Monarchs ranking ninth on the franchise's all-time list.
Cliche ranks ninth on Monarchs all-time points list with 137 and ranks 10th on the franchise's all-time assist list with 77.
King made his season debut with the Monarchs on Saturday, October 27 against the Sharks registering two assists in the game.
Last season, King was recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on February 10, 2012. He appeared in 27 regular season games totaling five goals and nine assists for 14 points. King also appeared in 20 playoff games for Los Angeles totaling five goals and three assists for eight points and 13 penalty minutes.
Hickey has three assists in his last four games.
Right wing Stefan Legein (1-4=5) is ranked 14th on the team with five points.
Left wing Richard Clune (1-3=4) and Andreoff are tied for 15th on the Monarchs with four points each.
Clune leads the team with 51 penalty minutes.
Clune's 743 penalty minutes rank second on the Monarchs all-time career penalty minutes list.
Andreoff tallied the game-winning goal at 1:43 of the third period on Opening Night against the Bruins on Friday, October 12.
Right wing Brian O'Neill (1-2=3) and left wing Jordan Nolan (1-2=3) are tied for 17th place on the Monarchs with three points each.
O'Neill has two points (1-2=3) in his last five games.
O'Neill scored his first goal of the season in a 3-2 loss against the Bruins on Friday, November 16.
Nolan has three points (1-2=3) in three games since returning from an upper body injury.
Center Robbie Czarnik (1-0=1), defenseman Andrew Campbell (0-1=1) and center Jordan Weal (0-1=1) are tied for 20th place on the Monarchs with one point each this season.
Czarnik recorded the first goal by a Monarchs player at the Verizon Wireless Arena for the 2012-13 regular season in a 4-3 defeat to the Bruins on Friday, October 19.
Campbell's 303 games rank second all-time on the Monarchs most games played list.
Campbell did not dress for the Monarchs on Sunday, October 28. It was his first game missed since March 13, 2011. Campbell remains out of the line-up with an upper body injury.
Weal tallied an assist on Legein's first goal of the season during a 5-1 win against the Pirates on Tuesday, November 20.
Right wing Justin Johnson (0-0=0) made his season debut against the Bruins on Friday, November 16. Defenseman Mike Matczak (0-0=0) made his Monarchs debut against the Sharks on Sunday, November 4.
Left wing David Meckler (0-0=0) made his season debut against the Sharks on Sunday, November 4.
Meckler holds the franchise record for games played with 350 in a Monarchs uniform. Meckler's 350 games came against the Pirates on Sunday, November 25.
Defenseman Vincent LoVerde (0-0=0) made his AHL debut on Saturday, November 12 against the Bruins.
Goaltender Martin Jones (7-7-1) surrendered a goal at 16:44 of the first period on Friday, November 9 marking his first goal against in 114:03 minutes spanning three games from November 4-9.
Jones has played in 15-of-18 games this season registering a 2.28 goals-against-average, a 0.925 save percentage and stopping 417-of-451 shots attempts.
Jones' 0.925 save percentage and 2.28 goal-against-average rank 11th and ninth in the league, respectively.
Goaltender Peter Mannino (2-1-0) made his Monarchs debut against his former team, the IceCaps, on Wednesday, November 7. Mannino allowed one goal in 60 minutes and made 26 saves of 27 shots (0.963 save percentage).
This season, Mannino has a 2.14 goal-against-average and a .920 save percentage in four games.
