Hershey Bears News Release
The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club snapped a three-game winless skid with an emphatic victory to wrap up the weekend. After being blanked by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-0 on Thanksgiving Eve, the BEARS traveled to Glens Falls for their first matchup against the Adirondack Phantoms. Zach Hamill netted the game's first goal off of a T.J. Syner setup, but Tye McGinn and Tyler Brown scored to put the Phantoms in the lead. The hosts held the 2-1 edge all the way until the final 30 seconds, fending off seven HERSHEY power plays and eventually getting an empty-net tally from Sean Couturier. Dany Sabourin had a strong game in goal, turning aside 27 of 29 shots. The BEARS wrapped up the weekend by hosting former HERSHEY star Keith Aucoin and the Toronto Marlies. Aucoin helped set up both Toronto goals, but they came far too late as HERSHEY built a 4-0 lead by the halfway point of the game. Alex Berry scored his first with HERSHEY to open the scoring, and Hamill fired a Jeff Taffe pass home past Mark Owuya on a power play to extend the lead. Cameron Schilling and Jon DiSalvatore then scored 45 seconds apart early in the second period, putting the game far out of reach. Braden Holtby made a personal season-high 40 saves to help his team to victory.
The BEARS head to Hampton Roads for their first meeting with the Norfolk Admirals on Wednesday. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers visit GIANT Center on Friday, and the Admirals come to town on Saturday for the annual WGAL Teddy Bear Toss Night.
BEARS NEWS AND NOTES
ONE DOWN AND ANOTHER TO GO: RW Jon DiSalvatore became the 82nd player in AHL history to record 500 points with his second-period goal on Sunday against Toronto. The goal snapped a personal five-game point drought and provided insurance in the BEARS' victory. DiSalvatore now has one more milestone on the horizon as he is just four games away from 700 in his AHL career.
HE BERRY'S ONE: RW Alex Berry netted his first goal with HERSHEY in Sunday's victory over Toronto, the team with which Berry played for two seasons. Having not played all of 2011-12 due to injury, Berry scored his first goal since April 9, 2011, while a member of the Norfolk Admirals.
HAMILL TIME: C Zach Hamill has gotten into a scoring groove recently, putting up five points (3-2-5) in his last five games. He was named the game's number one star in Sunday's win over Toronto, posting one goal, one assist and a plus-1 rating. Hamill has also taken over the team goal-scoring lead with his sixth of the season.
TAFFE TAKES OVER: C Jeff Taffe posted two assists in Sunday's victory, pushing his point total back into the team lead (5-10-15).
P-MAC IS BACK: D Patrick McNeill returned to the lineup on Sunday, his first game since the BEARS' home opener on October 20. McNeill assisted on the BEARS' first goal, and finished with a plus-2 rating.
BARLOW DEBUTS: LW Evan Barlow made his HERSHEY debut on Sunday, tallying one assist and a plus-1 rating. Barlow was signed to a professional tryout contract before the game and was summoned from the ECHL's Reading Royals, where he posted 10 points (4-6-10) and a plus-10 rating in just four games.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: The BEARS now have 27 players on their active roster to find the score sheet with at least one point - the highest number in the AHL. G Braden Holtby is the only player without a point.
