MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs season came to an end with 4-3 overtime loss to the Springfield Falcons in Game 4 of the best-of-five 2013 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
"It's bittersweet," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "We came a long way with this bunch and had a lot of personalities that came through. I am sure after we look at it and this thing dissipates, we will look back and see a lot of growth in these guys. We played well as a team. We hung in there against a very good team and had a chance to win this one today and got little bit sloppy again but the growth we have seen is pretty impressive I think."
Center Nick Drazenovic ended the game and the Monarchs season with an overtime goal at 8:06. Right wing Cody Bass stole the puck in the neutral zone and passed the puck to center Boone Jenner at the center ice face-off dot. Jenner passed to Drazenovic on the left wing as he gained the Monarchs zone. Drazenovic sprung free on a two-on-one break, skated into the left wing face-off circle and wristed a shot high over the glove of Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones for his first goal of the playoffs.
Springfield opened the scoring with a goal by defenseman Blake Parlett at 1:40 of the first period. Center Andrew Joudrey kept the puck in the Monarchs zone at the right point. Joudrey played the puck to Bass at the right wing half wall. Bass fired a pass to the right doorstep where Parlett redirected the pass high over the glove hand of Jones for his second goal of the playoffs.
The Monarchs tied the game with a goal by left wing Colton Yellow Horn at 8:33 of the opening period. Left wing Tanner Pearson played the puck up to center Jordan Weal as he entered the Falcons zone on the right wing. Weal got behind a Falcons defender creating a two-on-one with Yellow Horn. Weal fired a pass across to Yellow Horn in the slot where he skated across the front of the net faking a shot on the left doorstep and slipping it past Falcons netminder Curtis McElhinney on his backhand at the right doorstep. Yellow's Horn goal was his first tally of the post-season.
Manchester took the lead at 2-1 with a goal from center Linden Vey at 10:27 of the first period. Vey fed left wing Andy Andreoff on the left wing in the neutral zone. Andreoff carried the puck into the Falcons zone and to the bottom of the left wing face-off circle before dropping a pass back for Vey at the top of the circle. Vey wristed a shot from inside the left-wing face-off high over the McElhinney's glove side for his first goal of the post-season.
The Monarchs took a 3-1 lead with a goal by Vey at 5:17 of the second period. Defenseman Nick Deslauriers intercepted a pass by a Falcons defender and took the pass in on the net. Deslauriers flipped a backhand shot that produced a rebound in front of the net. After right wing Brandon Kozun attempted to poke it into the back of the net, Vey was able to corral it and wrist one for his second goal of the season.
The Falcons closed the Monarchs lead to 3-2 when Jenner scored at 13:35 of the second period. Center Nick Drazenovic intercepted a pass by a Monarchs defenseman and took control of the puck along the end boards. Drazenovic played the puck to Jenner who carried it out at the right door step before wristing a shot off the inner right leg pad of Jones for his first goal of the playoffs.
Springfield tied the game at 3-3 with a goal from center Michael Chaput at 18:24 of the second period. Left wing Ryan Craig carried the puck out from the left wing corner in the Monarchs zone and to the net. Craig's initial shot was denied by Jones but it produced a rebound in front of the goal causing a scramble. Right wing Spencer Machacek jabbed at the puck but the puck ricocheted toward the right doorstep where Chaput came in and jammed it home for his first goal of the post-season.
Jones (1-3) took his third loss of the playoffs making 33 saves on 36 shots in regulation and 4-of-5 shots in overtime. McElhinney (3-1) earned his third victory of the post-season stopping 33-of-36 shots faced in regulation and making saves on all four shots in overtime.
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Springfield went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
