Manchester Monarchs News Release

BERLIN, NH - The Manchester Monarchs and the New Hampshire Legends of Hockey traveled north to Berlin, New Hampshire to honor Notre Dame High School by wearing throwback jerseys from the school and playing their lone exhibition game against the Portland Pirates at Notre Dame Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Pirates edged the Monarchs 5-1 in the preseason contest.

Center Justin Azevedo put the Monarchs on the board at 16:44 of the opening period. Right wing Geoff Walker skated down the right wing into the Pirates zone with Azevedo to his left. One-timing the puck on a pass from Walker, Azevedo chipped the rubber up and over netminder Jhonas Enroth for the first goal of the exhibition game. Left wing Bud Holloway picked up the assist on the goal.

The Pirates scored four unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period to take the lead in the game. Right wing Kyle Wanvig scored his first tally of the preseason at the eight-second mark of the middle frame. Left wing Derek Whitmore followed with his first goal at 2:58. Center Paul Byron picked up an unassisted goal at 5:07 of the second period and center Felix Schutz finished off the scoring in that period with his first goal of the preseason at 8:33 on the power play.

Defenseman TJ Brennan finished off the Monarchs with his first goal at 8:35 of the final period. Brennan chipped in to help from the blueline and one-timed the puck past Manchester's goaltender Mike Zacharias.

Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff took the loss as he played the first 30 minutes of action. Zacharias let in one goal in the final 30 minutes of play.

The Monarchs open the 2009-10 season on the road with a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Albany River Rats at the Times Union Center on Saturday, October 3.
