
Pirates Prevail In Berlin

Berlin, NH - The Portland Pirates exploded for four goals in the opening nine minutes of the second period and went on to beat the Manchester Monarchs 5-1 in an American Hockey League pre-season game played this afternoon at Notre Dame Arena.
Kyle Wanvig began the uprising just eight seconds into the second period to erase a 1-0 Monarchs lead. Derek Whitmore, Paul Byron and Felix Schutz followed in quick succession as the Pirates built a 4-1 lead on their way to their first exhibition win of the year. TJ Brennan added a third period power-play goal to complete the Pirates goal scoring. Dennis Persson collected three assists in the contest while Tyler Ennis added two helpers.
Justin Azevedo netted the lone Manchester goal late in the first period.
Portland improved to 1-1 in exhibition play. Manchester is 0-1.
The Monarchs led 1-0 after one. Portland carried a 4-1 advantage into the third.
Jhonas Enroth played the entire game for Portland allowing one goal on 34 shots.
The Pirates outshot the Monarchs 35-34 in the game.
The Pirates complete their pre-season on Wednesday at the Portland Ice Arena when the University of New Brunswick Reds visit for a 7 p.m. start. The Pirates open the 2009-2010 American Hockey League regular season with a pair of road games. This Saturday (October 3rd) the Pirates will be in Springfield to meet the Falcons followed by a Friday, October 9th game against the River Rats in Albany. Both games can be heard live on Atlantic Coast Radio's WLOB 95.5FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
The Pirates 2009-2010 home opener will take place on Saturday, October 10th when the Providence Bruins visit the Cumberland County Civic Center for a 7 p.m. start. Tickets for the home opener, as well as all other Pirates home games at the Cumberland County Civic Center, go on sale to the general public on Friday, September 25th by calling (207) 775-3458, visiting the Cumberland County Civic Center Box Office or on-line at www.portlandpirates.com.
