Monarchs Edge Beast in School Day Thriller

October 17, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - The real winners of the Brampton Beast's School Day matinee against the Manchester Monarchs were the thousands of local school children who were on hand to witness the Beast drop a heartbreaking 5-4 overtime decision at the Powerade Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Beast captain Brandon Marino led the charge with a pair of tallies while Cody Donaghey recorded his first professional goal and Reggie Traccitto scored his first of the year as the Beast collected their first point of the season in spite of the loss.

Cody Donaghey got the crowd fired up early with a goal just 33 seconds into the game. Peeling off for a change, Donaghey glided over the red line and tossed an innocent looking shot against Manchester starting goaltender Charles Williams. The shot bounced off the back wall and got caught in the skates of Williams and somehow crossed the line, giving the Beast an early 1-0 lead.

Not long after, Brampton captain Brandon Marino was able to curl out of the left corner and feather a shot up and over the shoulder of Williams. The puck rolled down his back and into the open net for a 2-0 Beast lead at 12:49 of the first.

The Monarchs weren't going to go quietly and answered with a goal by defenseman Colton Saucerman to cut the Beast lead in half at 13:33. Manchester continued to push and was then rewarded with the tying goal just 51 seconds later, with Joel Lowry getting the final touch, sending the teams into their dressing rooms tied after 20 minutes.

Manchester broke the deadlock with a goal from Cory Ward just 53 seconds into the second frame.

The Monarchs controlled the play during the second period and pulled ahead by two when Lowry notched his second of the game at 9:39.

Brampton was down 4-2 and needed a spark as the second period began to wind down. Marino, leading by example, corralled a loose puck before spinning and firing it from a difficult angle to pull Brampton to within one with 4:55 remaining in the second.

In the third, the Monarchs ran into some penalty trouble that put the Beast on the power play. Reggie Traccitto located the puck in the slot and with plenty of time, picked the corner and fired home the game-tying goal with 6:50 remaining in regulation time.

The game went into overtime and both clubs had a bevy of chances to end it. With 38 seconds left on the clock, Tony Cameranesi was able to control a rebound off of Beast starting goaltender Michael McNiven and slide home the winner.

Despite the loss, the Beast were able to secure their first point of a young 2017-18 season. They will be on the road next taking on the Kalamazoo Wings in a home and home series this coming weekend, starting with a tilt in Kalamazoo on Saturday night.
