Monarchs Downed by Falcons in OT, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Monarchs lost in overtime for the second time in seven OT games this season, falling to Springfield 3-2 at the MassMutual Center on Sunday. Sean Backman scored a go-ahead goal midway through the third period, but the Falcons scored the game's next two goals to win it.

The Monarchs (24-7-2-1) have earned at least one point in three straight games but fell to 1-1-1-0 in three games against the Falcons (24-10-2-0) this season.

Both of Manchester's goals came on the power play (2-for-5) and it improved to converting at 21 percent (29-for-141) on the man advantage this season.

Luke Adam gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead 8:38 into the game when he scored on a one-timer on a 5-on-3 power play.

Paul Bissonnette engaged in his first fight of the season when he dropped the gloves against Mathieu Gagnon at 2:42 in the second.

Nick Shore knotted the score at 1-1 when he buried a rebound opportunity while Manchester was on the power play at 11:56 in the second. It was his team-high 19th goal of the season and sixth goal on the man advantage.

At 8:32 in the third period and Manchester on a power play, Backman tipped home a loose puck in front of Anton Forsberg to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead.

Springfield would tie the game again when Josh Anderson scored at 17:22 in the third.

The Monarchs will travel to St. John's for consecutive games at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday against the IceCaps. Their next home game will be on Jan. 10 when they host Binghamton at 7 p.m.

* Patrik Bartosak made his ninth start of the season, recording 22 saves on 25 shots. * Nick Shore (goal) has 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) over his last nine games beginning on Dec. 17. * Sean Backman has scored a goal in each of his last two games after netting the game-winner on Friday at WOR. It marks the second time this season he has scored in consecutive games (also Nov. 11-14). * Manchester has won nine of 14 games this season that were decided by one goal.
