Devils Rally But Fall to Sound Tigers

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Joe Whitney and Paul Thompson extended their point streaks and the Albany Devils fought until the final seconds but fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-3, Sunday in the second half of a two-game series at Webster Bank Arena.The Devils, who found themselves in penalty trouble early on against the team ranked first in the league on the power play, came within a goal and are now 3-3-0-2 against their Division Rival this season.

The score was knotted after 20 minutes with goals coming from Whitney and Cory Conacher. Whitney scored just 1:17 into the contest for his team-leading 31st point. A long pass from Paul Thompson found the left-winger in alone, who beat Sound Tigers netminder Kevin Poulin stick side for his 13th tally of the season. Conacher scored on a 5-on-3 power play. The equalizer came with 5:25 left in the first period.

In the second, Bridgeport's Aaron Ness scored after coincidental minors were called on Reid Boucher and Scott Mayfield. Harry Zolnierczyk gave the Sound Tigers a two-goal lead with a power-play tally at 18:48.

Thompson picked up his second point of the night and brought the Devils back within a goal on a 5-on-3 power play at 9:56 of the period. With fresh legs after an Albany timeout, Whitney found Thompson in the slot for his team-leading 15th goal of the season. Reece Scarlett was also credited with an assist.

With less than two minuted remaining in the game, Alan Quine doubled the Sound Tigers lead. Mike Sislo answered back with 5.1 seconds remaining in the contest when his shot from the point beat traffic. Rod Pelley and Thompson picked up assists on Sislo's eighth of the season.

Scott Wedgewood, who made his fourth appearance against Bridgeport this season, made 23 saves on 27 shots faced and is now 5-7-3 overall. The game saw 54 penalty minutes. The Devils went 1-7 on the man-advantage and 7-9 on the penalty kill.

Game Notes

Joe Whitney (1g-1a) had multi-point showings in both games against Bridgeport this weekend, and registered his eighth multi-point game of the season. He now has ten points (3g-7a) in his last five games and leads the team with 32 points ... Paul Thompson (1g-2a) also registered two multi-point games this weekend. The right-winger leads the team with 15 goals and is ranked second behind Whitney with 29 points ... The Devils have two games remaining in a ten-game series against the Sound Tigers this season. They move to 23-26-3-8 all-time against their Division Rival.

Next Up

The Devils return home to Times Union Center for the first of four meetings against the Hershey Bears on Friday, Jan. 9. Puck drop is set for 7 pm.
