Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Traverse City, Mich. - Grizzlies right-hander Vince Molesky was brilliant in a complete game shutout on Tuesday night at Wuerfel Park, as Gateway beat the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-0 to open a three-game series.
Molesky (3-5) allowed just seven hits while striking out 11 batters, the second highest single-game total of his career. The Pennsylvania native also got out of two situations with a pair of runners on-base and nobody out, while he also retired nine hitters in a row on two separate occasions.
After three scoreless frames from Beach Bums starter Tucker Simpson (0-1), the Grizzlies (28-29) scratched across a pair of runs in the fourth.
Tyler Tewell reached base after a throwing error while Blake Brown stepped in and smashed a double off the centerfield fence to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Ben Waldrip then hit an infield single while another throwing error brought Tewell and Brown into score to make it 2-0.
The Beach Bums (23-32) immediately threatened in the bottom half of the fourth as Steve Patterson and Jose Vargas began the frame with back-to-back singles. Molesky danced out of trouble for the first of two occasions as he retired the next three hitters in order.
RHP Jacob Lanning replaced Simpson for Traverse City in the fifth inning and would ultimately pitch five innings while allowing just a lone run. It came in the seventh when Craig Massoni split the right centerfield gap with a run-scoring double to extend Gateway's lead to 3-0.
After allowing another two hitters to get on-base to start the sixth, Molesky settled down to retire the next nine in a row. In the ninth, he gave up a leadoff single to Vargas but then induced a double play off the bat of Will Kenger.
After a single from Elijah Trail, he ended the game and polished off his complete game shutout with a game-ending pop up from Ryan Bottger.
It was Molesky's second career complete game and the first shutout of his professional career.
The Grizzlies and Beach Bums play the second game of their three-game set on Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.
The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Wednesday on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt has the play-by-play call.
