Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, ILL. - The Southern Illinois Miners got eight innings of one-run ball from RICK TEASLEY on the mound and scored runs in six of the nine innings they came to bat to beat the Joliet Slammers by a final score of 9-2 in the first of a three-game series against the first-place team in the East Division. With the win, the team's fourth in a row, Southern Illinois improved to 38-17 on the season.

STEVE MARINO got the scoring started in the second inning with an RBI single off Joliet starter Shane Bryant (2-2), and newest Miner KURT WERTZ, JR. followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Miners advantage. With a man at third and no one out, a double-play grounder scored AARON GATES in the third to make it 3-0 before NOLAN EARLEY crushed the first pitch from Bryant in the fourth for a solo homer and a 4-0 Miners advantage.

Joliet got a run back in the bottom of the frame thanks to three straight two-out singles, with an RBI single by Casey Fletcher making the score 4-1, but Teasley (5-3) would settle down from there. The left-hander pitched eight innings, scattering nine hits and just the lone run, walking one and striking out two while also inducing three inning-ending double plays. In the process, he passed Brett Scarpetta (2008-10) to become the Miners' all-time career leader in games started and innings pitched.

The Miners would keep up the offensive pressure, scoring twice in the top of the fifth on a double by SHANE KENNEDY and a wild pitch, then again in the seventh on an Earley sacrifice fly for a 7-1 lead.

Another Kennedy double and another wild pitch in the eighth led to the Miners' final runs in the contest and a 9-1 lead before Joliet scored a run in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.

For the game, Earley finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs while Kennedy went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs to pace the Miners' offense. FRANCISCO ROSARIO also finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Wertz walked twice, scored one run and drove in another in his Miners debut.

Southern Illinois will look to keep rolling and take the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. DYLLON NUERNBERG will take the mound for the Miners against Joliet right-hander Kaleb Ort.
