Laredo Lemurs News Release

Laredo, TX - Jimmy Mojica's second inning grand slam leads the Laredo Lemurs (23-17) to a 6-5 victory over the Amarillo Sox (25-15) on Friday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.

The Lemurs came to the plate in the second inning down 2-0 to the Sox and showed patience against starting pitcher Kristhiam Linares, (3-1) as they earned three walks, in the first four batters, to load the bases. That's when Jimmy Mojica stepped up to the plate and blasted a grand slam homerun over the left field wall to give the Lemurs a 4-2 lead after two.

Linares would not come out to pitch in the third for the Sox, ending his day throwing two, giving up four runs, on one hit, with five walks, and two strikeouts.

Lemurs starting pitcher David Newmann would pitch four and two thirds getting lifted before he qualified for the win. Newmann pitched into a bases loaded jam in the fifth leading manager Pete Incaviglia to turn to Bradly Blanks (4-0) to put the fire out. Blanks did just that by getting Brandon Jones to pop out to Mojica for the final out of the inning.

Blanks would go back out to the mound in the sixth for the Lemurs helping him nail down the victory in an inning and a third of work, with a strikeout.

Mike Benacka would pick up his seventh save of the season striking out the first two batters of the ninth. He then gave up three base hits, that resulted in a run for the Sox, that brought the game with in a run and a 6-5 score. With runners at first and second Benacka would face Joe Weik who would finally ground out to first for the final out of the game.

The win breaks up a five game losing streak for the Lemurs. They now sit two games back behind the Sox in the American Association South Division. The Lemurs will play the Sox through the weekend at Uni-Trade Stadium.
