Stockton Ports News Release
MODESTO, Calif. - For a second straight night at John Thurman Field, the Stockton Ports were done in by a pair of Modesto Nuts homers. Add to the mix that Nuts starter Austin Hutchison (2-3) turned in the best outing of his career and it equaled a second straight Stockton loss as the Ports fell to the Nuts by a final of 4-2.
Evan White opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with his second homer in as many games, a solo blast to left that gave the Nuts a 1-0 advantage.
Ports starter Evan Manarino (3-6) worked into the fifth inning and allowed the first four batters of the frame to reach. Beau Branton opened with a single, Kevin Santa walked, and Anthony Jimenez delivered a three-run homer to left to stretch the Modesto lead to 4-0.
Manarino would suffer the loss, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three.
Meanwhile, Hutchison was cruising as he set the side down in order in six of his first eight innings. Hutchison retired the first 11 batters he faced to open his outing. The stretch was broken up by a Viosergy Rosa single with two outs in the fourth. Luke Persico followed and drew a walk, but Hutchison went on to retire the next eight consecutive batters to take him one out deep into the seventh.
Hutchison had a chance at a complete-game shutout as he worked into the ninth. He gave up a leadoff double to Trace Loehr and, after getting Chase Calabuig to fly out, gave up an RBI double to Rosa that put the Ports on the board and chased Hutchison from the game.
Jefferson Medina (SV, 1) came on in relief of Hutchison and surrendered a two-out RBI double to Greg Deichmann that made it a 4-2 game and got Brett Siddall to the plate as the possible-tying run. Siddall, though, would line out to third to end the ballgame.
Hutchison earned the win, tossing a career-high 8 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Medina notched his first save of the season for the Nuts.
Rosa went 2-for-4 with an RBI in his Ports debut. He was the only Stockton batter with a multi-hit game.
The Ports and Nuts close out their three-game set on Thursday night at John Thurman Field. Matt Milburn (7-4, 3.45 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Ljay Newsome (5-8, 5.06 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
