VISALIA, CA (July 28th, 2013) -- Modesto scored three runs across the first two innings and never looked back en route to a 4-2 win over the Rawhide on Sunday night at Recreation Park.

With two outs in the first, Taylor Featherston and Ryan Casteel hit back-to-back doubles to get the Nuts on the board, and Jared Simon followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. David Kandilas added a 2-out RBI single in the third against Visalia starter Andrew Barbosa to make it 3-0.

Nuts starter Tyler Gagnon (9-9) struggled with his command, issuing a season-high six walks, but worked out of several key jams to allow just one run over 5 2/3 innings for the win.

Gagnon allowed a bases-loaded RBI single to Raul Navarro with two outs in the bottom of the second, but after one run scored, Ryan Stovall was caught on the bases stuck between third and home for the final out of the inning.

Visalia loaded the bases again the fifth, but Gagnon worked out of trouble by inducing cleanup hitter Jon Griffin into a double play to end the inning. Gagnon left in the sixth with two on and two out, and after allowing a single to load the bases himself, Kraig Sitton got a flyout to left to escape trouble.

Harold Riggins belted a solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh, his 16th of the season, to make it 4-1.

Barbosa (7-7) settled down after allowing three runs and six hits in the first two innings to last seven frames with four runs allowed in the loss.

Sitton returned and worked a scoreless seventh, and Bruce Kern added a scoreless eighth.

Scott Oberg gave up a solo home run to Gerson Montilla in the ninth, but finished the rest of the inning with no other trouble to nail down his league-leading 22nd save of the year.

With the win, the Nuts (20-18, 52-56) pulled within a game of San Jose for first in the North Division second-half standings.

Modesto now continues on the road with a three-game series looming in Bakersfield, starting on Monday night. RHP Chris Jensen (3-6, 4.73) will start for the Nuts. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
