Lancaster JetHawks News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - Delino DeShields fell a double shy of the cycle and drove in five runs but the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored two in the ninth to beat the JetHawks, 11-10, in walk-off fashion.
The back-and-forth game on Sunday at LoanMart Field ended when Pedro Guerrero blooped a two-run base hit to right field with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning against closer Travis Ballew (3-4).
The game began as a pitchers' duel but the pace quickly changed in the fifth inning. DeShields tripled in two runs in the top half of the inning to put Lancaster ahead 3-0 before the Quakes responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning against JetHawks starter Luis Cruz. During the Quakes' five-run rally, Noel Cuevas and Scott Schebler hit back-to-back home runs.
Cruz allowed five runs and struck out six over his five innings of work.
Lancaster would go on to erase two late game deficits. Down 7-4 in the top of the seventh, DeShields hit a three-run home run to tie the game only to have the Quakes put up two runs in the bottom of the inning to go back ahead.
Lancaster would tie the game in the eighth inning when Joe Sclafani tripled in a run and then scored on a Chris Epps sac-fly. Epps joined DeShields by scattering three hits on the night.
After Blair Walters struck out the side to keep the game tied heading into the ninth, the JetHawks would jump ahead in the top of the ninth. Andrew Aplin doubled and scored on an M.P. Cokinos single off Jarrett Martin (6-7) who ended up picking up the win.
The JetHawks (23-15, 62-46) head home to begin a six game homestand on Tuesday night against the Lake Elsinore Storm at 7 p.m.
