San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON - The San Jose Giants were held to five hits in a 4-2 loss to the Stockton Ports on Sunday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton took the early lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in claiming the rubber game of the series. San Jose finishes their six-game road trip with a 2-4 record.
Ricky Oropesa (2-for-4, 2B) had two hits and Matt Duffy (1-for-3, HR, RBI) smacked a solo home run to lead the Giants offensively in defeat.
Ports starting pitcher Tanner Peters (10-5) picked-up his 10th win of the season after limiting San Jose to a pair of runs (both earned) on four hits over seven innings of work. Peters walked two and struck out seven during his stint on the mound.
Stockton's first-inning rally started when Antonio Lamas drew a 10-pitch walk facing Giants starter Jason Forjet. Then with two outs, B.A. Vollmuth stepped to the plate and belted a two-run home run to deep left center. The home run, Vollmuth's 20th of the year, gave the Ports a 2-0 lead.
Stockton increased their advantage in the bottom of the third as Addison Russell and Lamas both singled to begin the frame before an RBI double off the wall in left from Bobby Crocker. Forjet though limited the damage in the inning inducing a pair of pop outs before a groundout kept the score at 3-0.
Meanwhile, San Jose's only baserunner over the first three innings was a single from Oropesa to begin the top of the second. The Giants broke through with their first run of the night in the top of the fourth when Duffy led off with a line drive home run to left. The home run was Duffy's first since joining San Jose from Augusta last Monday.
Peters recovered after the home run to retire the next eight Giants batters. He then worked around a two-out walk to Duffy in the top of the sixth to keep the score at 3-1.
In the seventh, Ryan Cavan drew a one-out walk before Elliott Blair singled with two outs to put runners on first and second. Eric Sim was up next and he lined a single into shallow center to plate Cavan bringing San Jose to within 3-2. Blair, the potential tying run, advanced to third on the RBI hit, but was stranded there when the following hitter, Myles Schroder, grounded out to end the inning.
After Ports reliever Tucker Healy worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, Stockton plated an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. Facing Chris Marlowe, Russell drew a leadoff walk before a sacrifice bunt from Lamas moved the runner to second. Crocker then hit a grounder that deflected off of Marlowe's glove and rolled behind the pitcher's mound. Marlowe's hurried throw to first then sailed wide and into the Ports dugout. Crocker was credited with an infield single while Russell scored on Marlowe's error to make it 4-2.
In the top of the ninth, Oropesa led off with a double to deep center off of Stockton closer Ryan Dull to bring the potential tying run to the plate. However, Dull wouldn't allow another hitter to reach base registering three consecutive strikeouts of Cavan, Devin Harris and Blair to end the game. Dull was credited with his sixth save of the year.
Forjet (3-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (all earned) on five hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out one.
Notes: Stockton won two out of three games in the series ... The Ports out-hit the Giants 9-5 ... San Jose committed a season-high tying four errors ... The Ports left 13 runners on base ...
