Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - T.J. Mittelstaedt claimed the second cycle in the last week for the Wichita Wingnuts, but they fell a run short, 13-12, to the Joplin Blasters Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Joplin (20-40) got off to a quick start, plating three in the opening inning against Todd Kibby (1-1).
Wichita (39-22) answered back with one on a solo homer by Brent Clevlen in the home half, then took the lead with three in the second on a wild pitch, a Leo Vargas triple, and an RBI double by Christian Stringer.
The lead did not last long, as a three-run frame put the Blasters back in front. The Wingnuts then drew level in the home half, as Mittelstaedt launched his second homer in as many days to tie the game at six apiece.
The Blasters took the lead for good in the fourth with a four-run inning, highlighted by a three-run shot by Brandon Tierney, who drove in six on the night.
Wichita drew within a pair with a two-run home half of the fourth, but saw the Joplin lead climb back to three in the fifth.
Vargas picked up his second RBI of the evening in the fifth, and then Mittelstaedt collected his double in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single by Martin Medina to bring the home team within a run.
Mittelstaedt completed his cycle with an eighth-inning single, becoming the second Wingnut to do it in the last week, with Zack Cox accomplishing the feat on July 17 against Sioux Falls.
In the ninth, Wichita once again drew within a run as Stringer collected his third RBI of the night, but Victor Capellan stranded the potential tying and winning runs by inducing a game-ending fly out.
The Wingnuts and Blasters wrap-up their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita will send right-hander Garrett Gould (0-0, 0.75) to the mound, while Joplin has yet to announce Sunday's starter. First pitch is set for 1:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
