Mitchell's 2 Home Runs Drain Power in Rockers Win

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Jared Mitchell hit a pair of home runs on Sunday to lead the High Point Rockers to a 5-2 win over the West Virginia Power at Appalachian Power Park. The win marked the third series win of the season for the Rockers.

Rockers' starter Mitch Atkins went four innings, scattering seven hits and striking out one. Ryan Chaffee pitched the fifth inning and allowed one hit while striking out one. Chaffee was credited with the win, his first of the season.

Mitchell hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and a two-run shot in the eighth to power the Rockers' offense.,

Preston Gainey earned the save, coming into the game with two outs in the ninth and the tying run at the plate. He ran the count to 3-0 on Jimmy Paredes before striking him out looking.

The Rockers took the lead in the top of the first as Cesar Trejo led off the game with a double, moved to third on a ground out by James McOwen and scored on an infield out by Stuart Levy.

The Rockers added a solo run in the third when J.R. DiSarcina reached on a dropped fly ball in the outfield, moved to third on a ground out by Trejo and scored on McOwen's double off the wall in right.

West Virginia cut the lead to 2-1 with an unearned run Atkins in the third inning. The Rockers committed a pair of errors in the frame making the run unearned.

Mitchell hit a solo homer in the fourth to give the Rockers a 3-1 lead. His second shot came with Levy on board and put the Rockers ahead 5-1 in the eighth.

West Virginia tallied a run in the eighth when Paredes homered to right field to cut the Rockers' margin to 5-2.

The Power put two runners on base in the ninth when High Point manager Jamie Keefe turned to Preston Gainey out of the bullpen who struck out Paredes to earn his first save of the year.

The Rockers will open a six-game homestand on Tuesday, June 15 at 7:05 p.m. at Truist Point against the Lexington Legends. Wednesday, June 16 will be Vaccination Night as any fan can receive a complimentary outfield box seat by showing their official Covid-19 vaccination card.
