Guelph Storm News Release
Guelph Storm rookie Zack Mitchell received the Paul Fendley Memorial Student Achievement Award for segment one of the 2009/10 season during the first intermission of Guelph's win over the Oshawa Generals.
As the top performing high school student for segment one, Mitchell received a $100.00 cheque presented to him by Annette Montgomery, President of the Storm Trackers and Donna Rawbone Education Consultant for the Guelph Storm.
Storm players are graded in seven categories to compete for the awards. The awards are presented each month alternating between secondary school players and players attending post-secondary institutions.
Storm players attending high school have the opportunity to be the top high school student five times throughout the year. At the end of the season, the top performing student will be the Storm's nominee for the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award. Last year, Storm forward Peter Holland was the runner up to Niagara's Freddie Hamilton.
University students are also recognized in three segments and the top university student will be the Storm's nominee for the Bobby Smith Memorial Award. Storm defenceman Tim Priamo was the league recipient last season taking 5 courses and averaging 80%, the Guelph native won all three RBC awards last year for academic achievement.
