GREAT FALLS, MONT. - Despite outhitting the Great Falls Voyagers (9-6), 8-7, on Saturday night on the road, the Missoula Osprey (10-7) fell by a count of 4-2 at Great Falls' Centene Stadium. The game, which preceded a fireworks show for the Fourth of July, was played as part of a six-game stretch in six days that pits the two teams against each other.
A three-run homer from Antonio Rodriguez got the Voyagers off to a great start in the first inning, as the home team got on the board first and never looked back. A leadoff walk and single off of Osprey starter Anfernee Benitez set the table for Rodriguez' third homer of the year, including his second in as many days.
Benitez fell to 0-2 with the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Great Falls received a stellar combined pitching performance from Zack Erwin and Brandon Magallones, as the two combined to throw the first 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out five in a "piggyback" start. Magallones threw the latter 4.0 shutout innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out five to improve to 1-0 with the victory.
Lucas Shearrow threw the final 2.0 innings of relief, allowing a run on one hit and two walks to record his first save of the year.
Missoula received two-hit nights from Isan Diaz, Marcus Wilson and Joey Armstrong, with Diaz and Armstrong both scoring a run. The two-hit night was the seventh multi-hit game of the year for Diaz, who has now hit safely in five straight games.
The biggest hit of the night for the O's came in the second inning as Kal Simmons lined a two-out RBI-double into the right field corner to bring home Armstrong. The extra-base hit was Simmons' first of the year.
Missoula will conclude the string of six straight games against Great Falls tomorrow at 1:00 pm MT. A victory tomorrow would ensure that Missoula at least earns a first-half series split with Great Falls. RHP Scott Schultz (0-1, 5.59 ERA) will toe the rubber for Missoula opposite RHP Evin Einhardt (0-1, 5.52 ERA). The O's will then take Monday off from play before returning to host Ogden at 7:05 pm MT on Tuesday to start a seven-game home stand from Ogren Park Allegiance Field.
