
Mississippi Signs Three To Tryouts, Including First-Ever Local

BILOXI, Miss. â Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and coach Bob Woods announced today that three players, left wing Tyler Bellamy (BEHL-ahm-ee), forward Andy Johnson and right wing Justin Messer, who hails from Gulfport, Miss., have signed tryout agreements.
Bellamy, 21, played 2003-04 with the Prince George Spruce Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League. The 6-foot and 190-pound Bellamy tallied seven goals and 15 points to go along with 112 penalty minutes in 31 games.
Johnson, 26, played one season of professional hockey in 1998-99, appearing in 42 games with Greenville of the ECHL and one contest with Asheville of the United Hockey League. The 6-foot-4 and 220-pound Johnson continued his hockey career from 1999-2001 with the St. Thomas University Tommies of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union in his hometown of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Johnson compiled four goals, 13 points and 104 penalty minutes in 37 university games. Johnson was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round, 130th overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
Messer, 22, becomes the first-ever local player to tryout for the Sea Wolves after playing his entire youth hockey in the Gulf Coast Youth Hockey Association in Biloxi. Last season, Messer played inline hockey for Crescent City in New Orleans of the Crescent City Hockey League. The 5-foot-7 and 170-pound Messer netted four goals, 10 points and zero penalty minutes in six games at the Under-20 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics.
The three tryouts bring the Sea Wolves training camp total to 24 players. The on-ice sessions, which are open to the public, begin at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Others taking part in Mississippi's camp include defensemen Chris Cava, Kerry Ellis-Toddington, Lee Jacobson, Mike Jarmuth, Jason Kean, Mike Martone, Milt Mastad and Austin Miller. Forwards consist of Anthony Battaglia, Darryl Campbell, Nicolas Corbeil, Bobby Cunningham, Lucas Drake, Louis Dumont, Jeff Hutchins, Jay Legault, Travis Lisabeth and Tristan Lush, while goaltenders Brian Gallagher, Randy Hevey and Jason Wolfe will also compete for a roster spot.
The Sea Wolves open their ninth season in the 28-team ECHL at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, October 22 against the Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
