
Two Assigned from AHL, Another Signed

SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls have been assigned defenseman Andrew Canzanello and Ian Forbes from the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and have acquired forward Colin Embley for the 2004-05 season, head coach Martin St. Amour announced on Tuesday. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Canzanello, 22, begins his professional career after playing for Colorado College the last four years, where he averaged 21 points a season. He led Colorado College defensemen with 26 points last season and was also ranked second among defensemen in 2002-03 with 30 points (4g, 26a). During his collegiate stint, the 5-foot-11-inch, 190-pound native of Rochester, Minn. recorded 84 points and 168 PIM.
Forbes, 24, joins the Gulls after spending last season with the ECHL's Florida Everblades, posting a career high with seven assists. The 6-foot-6-inch, 215-pound native of Brampton, Ontario has averaged more than 183 penalty minutes over a four-year professional career that began with the ECHL's Trenton Titans in 2000-01. In addition, Forbes has also spent time with the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms, attaining 88 penalty minutes in 38 games. Forbes was a second round selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft and, in 2000 and 2001, spent some time in their training camp.
Embley, 27, comes to San Diego after splitting last season with the United Hockey League's Missouri River Otters and Flint Generals, notching 54 points (28g, 26a). Playing for the West Coast Hockey League's Fresno Falcons in 2002-03, the 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pound native of Vernon, British Columbia was named Rookie of the Year after leading all rookies with 44 points (25g, 19a), as well as scoring the most power-play and game-winning goals. Prior to turning pro, he was named the University of Calgary's team MVP in 2000-01.
The Gulls open training camp on Friday. They have two preseason games scheduled against the Long Beach Ice Dogs: Friday Oct. 15 at Glacial Gardens and Sunday Oct. 17 at the San Diego Ice Arena.
