Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (19-17, 48-58) blasted the Birmingham Barons (53-52, 21-16) by a final score of 11-6 in game two of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Sunday evening. Sunday's game was a scoring fest as a total of 17 runs were scored between the M-Braves and the Barons. Ray-Patrick Didder had a career night at the plate after recording 4 RBI and finishing a double shy of hitting for the cycle. At the plate, Didder went 3-for-4 with a HR, 3B, and 3 R in addition to his 4 RBI.
Much like the previous night, the M-Braves got off to a fast start as they gained an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The M-Braves were able to capitalize on a wild pitch by Alec Hansen and a throwing error by Zack Collins. Hansen's wild pitch allowed Tyler Neslony to score from third base and Collins' error allowed Travis Demeritte to score from third base after the failed pickoff attempt.
The M-Braves plated another pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Daniel Lockhart that allowed Brandon Downes to score followed by a run scored by Ray-Patrick Didder on the second wild pitch of the game from Hansen.
Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the third inning, the Barons rallied for four runs to tie the game 4-4 in the top half of the inning courtesy of a RBI single from Luis Alexander Basabe immediately followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Collins and Trey Michalczewski.
The M-Braves answered back in bottom of the third inning with a four-run inning of their own to take an 8-4 lead. Didder produced three of the M-Braves four runs in the inning with a three-run home run that landed in the M-Braves bullpen beyond the left field wall. Brett Cumberland and Brandon Downes were the runners on base when Didder launched the three-run shot. For Didder, it was the first home run of his Double-A career. Lockhart scored the fourth run of the inning for the M-Braves after a bases-loaded walk was issued to Demeritte.
Didder and Lockhart combined to drive in two insurance runs for the M-Braves in the bottom of the fourth inning. After homering in his previous at-bat, Didder laced a triple to right field that allowed Luis Valenzuela to score. Lockhart then ripped a sharp line drive single right field, scoring Didder, extending the M-Braves lead 10-4.
Demeritte finished off the scoring for the M-Braves in the bottom of the fifth inning after crushing his 12th home run of the season, a screaming line drive that traveled well over the left field wall.
The Barons made a final surge in the top of the seventh inning as they scored two runs, making the score 11-6. Alex Call drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed Collins to cross the plate. Matt Rose added a line drive RBI single to left field, plating Michalczewski.
M-Braves starter, Michal Mader (3-2, 3.38) earned the win. Mader finished the game with a final line of 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K and 0 HR. Barons relief pitcher, Brian Clark (1-2, 5.14) suffered the loss.
Mississippi and Birmingham will tango in game three of the series at Trustmark Park beginning at 7:00 p.m. (CST) on Monday night (July 30th.) RHP Kyle Wright (6-8, 3.70) will get the start for the M-Braves on Monday night. Wright's counterpart on the mound will be RHP Dylan Cease (2-0, 2.83.) Monday's game will feature the SportClips Military Monday promotion presented by SportClips (military may purchase a $7 ticket in all seating areas, excluding Suite Level, when presenting a valid ID. One random fan, representing the military, will receive a SportClips Prize Pack.)
