Shaffer and Roegner Added to Shuckers Roster
July 29, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
PENSACOLA, FL - In a trio of moves announced by the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, the Biloxi Shuckers have added utility man Richie Shaffer and LHP Cameron Roegner to their roster. Jake Gatewood has also been placed on the disabled list after suffering an ACL injury.
Having spent two seasons at the Major League level, Shaffer joins the Shuckers after being signed by the Milwaukee Brewers to a minor league contract. A former first round pick (25th overall in 2012) of the Tampa Bay Rays, Shaffer brings a veteran presence to the Shuckers clubhouse. The Clemson product played 21 of his 51 big league games at first base in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he belted 30 home runs with a .338 on-base percentage for Triple-A Columbus as a member of the Cleveland Indians organization. He appeared in 32 games with Columbus this season before being released.
Roegner earned his promotion to Biloxi after earning a Mid-Season All-Star selection in the Carolina League with the Mudcats. The lefty pitched to a 9-5 record in 19 starts with a 2.16 ERA over 108.1 innings. A 22nd round pick of the Brewers in 2016 out of Bradley University, Roegner joins a Shuckers pitching staff with just one left-handed pitcher on the roster. After LHP Kodi Medeiros was traded earlier in the week, Roegner will be the lone southpaw in the starting rotation.
Gatewood will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in Jackson. The Shuckers first baseman set a new career high with 19 home runs in a season. He also cracked 19 doubles while driving in 59 runs and scoring 45.
The Shuckers continue a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Sunday evening. First pitch is set for 5:05 PM CT. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WCGM 1240 AM/ FM 100.9 and online on TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
