Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, TN - The Tennessee Smokies defeated the Chattanooga Lookouts 8-3 on Sunday night at Smokies Stadium. It was the Smokies second straight win and their third in their last four games.
Keegan Thompson got the start for the Smokies and picked up his third win of the season. Thompson pitched five innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out two. The outing lowered Thompson's ERA to 3.21.
After a scoreless four and a half innings, the Smokies got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth. Wynton Bernard walked to start the inning and moved to third on an error by the Lookouts catcher. With two outs, Vimael Machin hit his fourth home run of the season over the fence in right field. The home run put Tennessee up 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Smokies added to their lead. Yasiel Balaguert led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice fly to center field. A sacrifice fly from P.J. Higgins would score Balaguert and put Tennessee up 3-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Smokies put the game out of reach. Singles from Connor Myers and Machin put runners on first and second with one out. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Erick Castillo drove them both in with a double. Zack Short walked to put two runners back on base and Eddy Martinez doubled them both home to make it a 7-0 game. In the bottom of the eighth, the Smokies scored one more on a Machin single.
Jordan Minch replaced Thompson in the sixth inning on the mound and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit. The next arm out of the bullpen was Scott Effross, and he pitched just a third of an inning, giving up two runs on four hits. With the bases loaded and no one out in the top of the eighth, Daury Torrez entered and retired the next three batters. Torrez gave up one run in the ninth.
The Lookouts and Smokies will be back in action for game three of the series on Monday night at Smokies Stadium. Duncan Robinson is the projected starter for Tennessee as he looks for win number six on the season.
