San Antonio Missions News Release
The Tulsa Drillers discovered Friday night how San Antonio starting pitcher Cesar Ramos won last week's Texas League Pitcher of the Week award. Ramos (6-7) pitched five solid innings, giving up two runs (1 ER) on four hits as the Missions defeated the Drillers 10-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Drillers Stadium.
Last week, Ramos threw a three-hit, shutout against Midland. He is the only pitcher in the Texas League with two nine-inning shutouts this season.
Ramos was aided Friday by a three-run first inning from the Missions. Tulsa starter Samuel Deduno gave up two singles and hit a batter to begin the game. Josh Howard scored on a passed ball to give the Missions their first run of the game. Another walk to Sean Wooten loaded the bases again, and Will Venable followed with a double to right that plated Peter Ciofrone and Chase Headley.
The Missions added to their lead with two runs in the third. Brett Dowdy walked and scored on a Mike Johnson triple. Johnson then scored on Sean Kazmar's double to left to give the Missions a 5-0 lead.
Tulsa pushed across its first run in the bottom of the third as Corey Wimberly doubled and scored on a throwing error by Missions shortstop Kazmar.
The Missions scored three more times in the top of the fourth, and the Drillers missed a chance in the bottom of the inning to get back in the game. They loaded the bases with no outs, yet were able to push only one run across when Matt Miller scored on a Duke Sardinha groundout.
San Antonio completed the scoring on a two-run homer by Headley, his 14th of the year, in the seventh inning.
The game was delayed by rain for 43 minutes at the beginning of the sixth inning.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Deduno (4-3). It was his first loss since May 18 as he surrendered eight runs on nine hits in four innings. He walked five and struck out four.
