Springfield Cardinals News Release
Adam Daniels gave the Springfield Cardinals seven scoreless innings, as the Redbirds blanked the Midland RockHounds on Friday night, winning by a score of 4-0 at Citibank Ballpark in Midland. The win for the Cards gives them a three-game sweep over the Hounds and 11 consecutive wins on the road.
Daniels (2-1) won his second straight start, in just his third Double-A appearance since being called up from Palm Beach. The left-hander allowed just three hits and two walks with three strikeouts, using three double plays in the first three innings to keep the Hounds off the scoreboard.
Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Colby Rasmus doubled with two outs, then scored on an RBI single from Juan Richardson.
They added to their lead in the fifth, as Jose Martinez opened the inning with a single, then scored on a double by Mark Shorey, making it 2-0. Shorey would later score from third on a wild pitch by Midland starter Ben Fritz (8-4).
The Redbirds got their final run in the seventh as Rasmus doubled home Sean Danielson, who reached on a fielder's choice, giving Springfield a 4-0 lead.
Daniels was removed after seven innings, as Kyle McClellan worked the final two frames. Midland catcher Anthony Recker opened the eighth with a double, but McClellan retired the next six hitters to keep Springfield's fourth shut-out of the year intact.
The Cards improve to 6-3 in the second half and a season-best eight games over .500 overall at 42-34. Springfield will travel to Frisco on Saturday for a three-game series against the First Half South Division Champion Frisco RoughRiders. Mitchell Boggs (6-3) will go for the Cards, while the Riders will send Doug Mathis (7-4) to the bump. Game time on Saturday from Frisco is scheduled for 7:00pm.
