Missions Pitch Second No-Hitter in Three Games

SAN ANTONIO - History was made at Nelson Wolff Stadium for the second time in four days on Wednesday night. The San Antonio Missions combined for their second no-hitter in three games with a 4-0 victory over the Midland RockHounds. Ryan Lillie started it off for San Antonio. Michel Baez and Osvaldo Hernandez pitched the middle innings. Mason Fox locked it down in the ninth. This is the 16th 9.0 inning no-hitter in Missions history.

Ryan Lillie was the starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions making his second start of the season. He had to pitch out of a jam in the top of the first inning. Zack Gelof drew a one-out and stole second base. With a runner in scoring position and two outs, Logan Davidson grounded out to end the inning.

Ryan Cusick was the starting pitcher for the Midland RockHounds. The Missions put him in a tough spot in the bottom of the first inning. Esteury Ruiz drew a lead-off walk. He has reached base safely in all 35 games this season. Ruiz put himself in scoring position after stealing second base. He then advanced to third base on a fly out from Connor Hollis. Yorman Rodriguez hit a ground ball to shortstop Logan Davidson. On the play, Ruiz attempted to score but Davidson threw him out at home.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Missions took the lead with a three-run, four-hit inning. Thomas Milone began the inning with a base hit and then Jorge Ona was hit by a pitch. Tirso Ornelas hit a single to center field. On the play, Milone was tagged out at home after a terrific throw from center fielder Chas Calabuig. Chris Givin kept the hit parade alive and loaded the bases with a base hit. After a Connor Kaiser strikeout, Esteury Ruiz cleared the bases with a triple. Ruiz's three-bagger gave the Missions a 3-0 lead.

In his longest outing of the season, Lillie held the Midland offense without a hit across four innings of work. With one walk allowed, the right-hander struck out four batters. Michel Baez took over for Lillie heading into the fifth inning.

It was announced prior to the game that Michel Baez and Adrian Morejon were continuing their rehab assignments in San Antonio. Baez struck out the side in his first inning of work. In the top of the sixth inning, he allowed one walk while striking out two more batters. The combined no-hitter continued into the seventh inning.

The Missions added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Facing Michael Danielak, Connor Kaiser started off the inning with a base hit. Kaiser advanced to second after Ruiz hit a ground out. With two outs in the inning, Kaiser advanced to third base on a passed ball. Yorman Rodriguez drove in Kaiser with a single to left field. The Missions improved their lead to 4-0.

Osvaldo Hernandez replaced Baez in the top of the seventh inning. With two terrific defensive plays from Hollis and Chris Givin, Hernandez pitched a scoreless inning and kept the no-hitter alive. Hernandez retired the next three batters in the top of the eighth inning to continue the no-hit bid.

Mason Fox came on to pitch the ninth inning. He allowed a lead-off walk to Max Schuemann. Zack Gelof stepped up to the plate and swung at the first pitch and grounded into a double play. Jonah Bride stepped up to the plate with two outs. Bride grounded out to Chris Givin to finish off the no-hitter.
