
Missions' Geer Flirts with No-Hit Bid

FRISCO, TX- Under the direction of former major-leaguer Josh Geer (1-0), the Missions claimed game one of the four-game series against the RoughRiders 5-2 Friday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Making a spot start for an injured Robbie Erlin, Geer carried a no-hitter into the top of the eighth, before Jared Prince broke it up with a double down the rightfield line.
A three-run fourth and a two-run fifth capped off a frustrating start for Justin Grimm (6-3) who picked up his third loss of the season.
Scoreless through the first three frames, San Antonio busted the game open in the fourth. Dean Anna began the charge with a single to center field. Cody Decker added a single, while a pair of doubles by Jonathan Galvez and Edinson Rincon made it 3-0 Missions.
The visitors continued to build their lead in the fifth. Jake Blackwood started the rally with a single to center, two batters Anna followed suit putting runners at first and second. A pair of walks brought home Blackwood, ending Grimm's night.
On in relief, Fabio Castillo allowed a single to left that scored one, but a strong throw by Ryan Strausborger retired Cody Decker at the plate, to get the "ËRiders out of the inning.
Trailing 5-0, Frisco added its first run in the top of the eighth, to end Josh Geer's no-hit bid. The first hit came from Jared Prince, on the first pitch of the inning, poking a double past first baseman Nate Freiman. Prince moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a Jose Felix single.
Frisco tacked one more run in the bottom of the ninth after a Jurickson Profar triple, and a Mike Olt sac-fly. The three-bagger by Profar extended his hitting streak to 28 games.
The Missions improve to 19-22, while the "ËRiders drop to 24-17. Josh Geer earned his first win of the season pitching 7.1 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, walking two and striking out four. Justin Grimm picked up the loss, pitching for 4.2 frames, allowing seven hits, five earned runs and walking three. He struck out four.
Frisco plays game two against San Antonio Saturday night. Right-handed hurler Carlos Pimentel (3-2, 2.65) tosses for the 'Riders. He will be opposed by righty Keyvius Sampson (2-2, 4.93). First pitch is slated for 7:00, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com . Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30. The game will also be televised on TXA-21.
