Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - Back at home after a long eight-game road trip, the Cardinals welcomed the Tulsa Drillers to Hammons Field for a four-game set.
Springfield sent righty Scott Gorgen to the mound, still in search of his first win since May of 2010, against fellow right hander Parker Frazier.
The Drillers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first against Gorgen as Jimmy Cesario walked ahead of Nolan Arenado's two-run homer to give Tulsa a 2-0 cushion.
Springfield got a run across in the 2nd as Greg Garcia homered onto the training facility in right field to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Tulsa answered in the top of the third collecting a run with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice by Kiel Roling to go up by a pair again, 3-1.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the bottom of the third as Scott Gorgen singled and Jose Garcia and Oscar Taveras each walked. Chris Swauger followed with a sacrifice fly to get Springfield within a run again, 3-2.
In the 5th, not only would the Cardinals tie the game, but they'd take the lead for the first time. Kolten Wong blasted a solo homer, his 3rd, to open the frame and after a Jose Garcia single, Chris Swauger launched his first homer of the season, a two-run homer, to give Springfield a 5-3 advantage.
Scott Gorgen was dominant in his start going six innings for just the second time this season allowing three runs on four hits while striking out a Cardinals' and a career high 10 batters.
Springfield manufactured a run in the 7th as Oscar Taveras walked to open the inning, moved to third on a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Greg Garcia to make it a 6-3 lead for the Redbirds.
Eric Fornataro tossed two perfect innings. Keith Butler loaded the bases in the 9th, but struck out two straight batters to end the game and give Gorgen his first win since May 3, 2010.
Springfield will continue their series the Drillers Saturday night. The Cardinals will send Deryk Hooker to the mound against lefty Nick Schmidt. Game time is scheduled for 6:08pm.
Saturday, the Cardinals will be giving away 2,500 World Series Champion Long Sleeve Shirts thanks to our friends at Coca-Cola. This classic long sleeve shirt will feature the names of all 23 former Springfield Cardinals players that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win their 11th World Series title in 2011.
Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or by call (417) 863-2143.
