Missions Fall to Hooks in 13-Inning Classic

May 14, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

In a game that took four hours and two minutes to play, San Antonio suffered a heart-breaking, 7-6, 13-inning loss to Corpus Christi Wednesday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

The Hooks opened scoring in the first Wednesday, getting a two-out RBI single by Matt Duffy off rehabbing Casey Kelly. In the bottom of the frame, the Missions evened the score with a two-out hit of their own thanks to Rymer Liriano's bloop, RBI single to right.

The two-out scoring continued in the top of the second as an error by shortstop Brian Bixler extended the inning for Joe Sclafani, who gave Corpus Christi a 3-1 lead with a two-run single to left.

Two innings later, San Antonio drew even again courtesy of red-hot Austin Hedges' two-run homer to left off reliever Jordan Jankowski. It was the first career dinger at the Wolff for Hedges.

Rymer Liriano put the Missions in front, 4-3, when he led off the sixth with a homer to right center.

Unfortunately, for the home crowd of 4,723, the Missions lead was short lived as Sclafani knotted the score at four in the top of the seventh with a two-out, solo homer off reliever Leonel Campos. The right-hander had entered the game for Kelly, who allowed three runs (just one earned) on seven hits and a walk, while striking out two over six innings. Kelly threw 59 of his 88 pitches for strikes.

The game eventually headed to extras, but not before San Antonio nearly walked off Corpus Christi in the bottom of the ninth. Hedges opened the frame with a single to left and then moved up to second on Yeison Asencio's sacrifice bunt. After Jorge De Leon intentionally walked Lee Orr, the right-hander got Bixler to fly out to center for the second out. That brought up Reymond Fuentes, who ripped what looked to be a game-winning single into right. However, right fielder Andrew Aplin fired a perfect throw to catcher Tyler Heineman to barely get Hedges.

In the top of the 10th, the Hooks once again, got a clutch, two-out hit, this time a double from Preston Tucker to take a 5-4 lead.

San Antonio returned the favor in their half of the inning when Liriano took De Leon deep for a dramatic, game-tying, two-out solo homer to right.

After both teams failed to score in the 11th, Corpus Christi took back the lead in the 12th. Sclafani and Aplin opened the inning with consecutive singles off reliever Adys Portillo. With Duffy up next, Portillo uncorked a wild pitch, which caused Sclafani to break for third. Hedges got to the ball, but his throw to Jake Lemmerman sailed high and into left field, allowing Sclafani to score.

Lemmerman picked up his teammate in the bottom of the 12th, tying the game with a two-out, solo homer to left off Travis Ballew.

In the top of the 13th, Corpus Christi took the lead for good on Telvin Nash's sac fly to left. The big play of the inning was a throwing error by Luis De La Cruz (0-4) on a pickoff attempt, which allowed Jio Mier (leadoff walk) to advance from first to third.

Patrick Urckfitz worked around a two-out walk in the bottom of the 13th to notch his second save of the season. Ballew (2-0) picked up the win, allowing just the Lemmerman homer in his two innings.

San Antonio (17-22) and Corpus Christi (20-19) conclude their four-game series Thursday on Cricket Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.

Notes: The Missions set a new season high with four homers on Wednesday. They have hit 18 homers in their last 16 games after hitting just 12 in their first 23 games of the season. Liriano's second, two-homer game now gives him nine on the season, tying him with Springfield's James Ramsey for the TL lead. Hedges finished 2-for-5 with a walk in the game and is now hitting .538 (7-for-13) in the series.
