San Antonio Missions News Release

In Tuesday's homestand finale, San Antonio dropped a nail biter to Springfield 3-2 in 10 innings.

Offense was at a premium to say the least Tuesday night at the Wolff.

San Antonio starter Colin Rea allowed just a one-out walk to Nick Martini through his first five innings. The Cascade, IA native did not allow a Springfield hit until Charlie Tilson's two-out single in the top of the sixth. Rea went a career-high seven and a third innings, allowing just an unearned run on three hits and one walk (his first of 2015), while striking out three.

The Cardinal run came in the top of the eighth when pinch-hitter Anthony Garcia followed Casey McElroy's one-out error with an RBI double to deep left center.

On most nights, Rea would have cruised to his first Double-A victory, but on Tuesday, mound opponent, Mike Mayers, was just as dominant. Mayers, who entered the game carrying a 14.21 ERA, held the Missions to just four hits and a walk over seven shutout innings.

However, Mayers would also be denied a victory when teammate Ronnie Shaban allowed Mission catcher Griff Erickson to tie the game at one in the bottom of the eighth with a deep homer to right.

San Antonio threatened to do more in the frame, loading the bases with two outs for Hunter Renfroe. But, reliever Justin Wright ended the rally by striking out the Missions' cleanup hitter.

After both teams failed to score in the ninth, the game moved to extras.

In the top of the 10th, Springfield put together a rally against reliever Jay Jackson, who had not allowed a run through his first four appearances (6.2 IP) this season. The Cardinals strung together four hits against Jackson (0-1) in the inning, with consecutive, run-scoring singles by pinch-hitter Breyvic Valera and Charlie Tilson making the score 3-1.

San Antonio refused to go quietly in the bottom of the frame against closer Kurt Heyer. Travis Jankowski and Trea Turner started the rally with consecutive one-out singles. McElroy followed with a single of his own, scoring Jankowski from second and cutting the Missions' deficit in half. However, that's as close as San Antonio would get as Heyer (2nd save) got Renfroe to bounce into a game-ending double play.

Wright (1-0), the goat from Monday night, picked up the win Tuesday with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.

Following a day off, San Antonio (5-7) travels to Security Bank Ballpark on Thursday to begin a four-game series with the Midland RockHounds (5-7). Bryan Rodriguez (0-2, 10.00) will take the hill for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Tanner Peters (0-2, 11.74).

Notes: Jankowski (2-for-5) and Turner (1-for-4) extended their hitting streaks to a club-high nine games. Tuesday's game was the first extra-inning game in the Texas League this season. In 2014, San Antonio played in 25 extra-inning games. Rea lowered his ERA to a minuscule 0.86 (2 ER/21 IP).
