Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Northwest Arkansas (5-6) defeated the Frisco RoughRiders (5-6) on Monday night by the score of 2-0 to even the series at a game apiece behind strong performances by a couple of the Royals top prospects.
The Naturals sent RHP Miguel Almonte, the number 5 prospect in the Royals organization according to MLB.com, to the mound and he dazzled through 4 innings of work in his first home start of the 2015 season. The young Dominican right-hander allowed only one hit and struck out five while not walking a single batter on an efficient fifty-six (56) pitch effort.
The offense was led by Jorge Bonifacio as the Naturals out hit the RoughRiders for the second night in a row. With Frisco starter Alec Asher and Almonte locked in a pitching duel early, the Naturals broke the scoreless tie in the bottom half of the third inning with a two-out rally. Lane Adams worked a walk and then advanced to second base on a single by Angel Franco. Bonifacio, the Naturals three hole hitter, was next to the plate. Lane Adams promptly stole third base, his fifth stolen base of the season, on the first pitch to set the table for the Royals number 9 prospect according to MLB.com. On the very next pitch, Bonifacio drove a two-out, two-run double to left field to give the Naturals a 2-0 advantage in the game and all the runs they would need. The Naturals right fielder finished the game going 2-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
LHP Daniel Stumpf (2-0, 2.35 ERA) took over from where Almonte left off in the fifth inning as he retired the first seven batters he faced while striking out three hitters before giving up a hit to Jorge Alfaro in the seventh. In total, he worked three scoreless innings and only allowed the one hit while striking out four to earn the victory. RHP Reid Redman came into the game in the eighth inning and closed it out for the Naturals, striking out three and recording the first save by the bullpen this year.
The combination of Almonte, Stumpf, and Redman combined to strike out twelve (12) RoughRiders tonight while only allowing 2 walks. In addition, the Naturals pitching staff has now recorded two shutouts in their last three ballgames.
