San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio - The San Antonio Missions scored first and avoided the series sweep by defeating the visiting Frisco Roughriders 9-4, thanks in part to the bottom of the order who combined for five RBI's and six hits on the night. San Antonio improves to 24-36 as Frisco falls to 36-24.

The Missions scored on a sharp RBI single back up the middle by left fielder Bryan Altman to grab an early 1-0 lead. Starting catcher Jason Hagerty reinjured his back in the second inning and had to leave early. He was on the DL for one week in late May with a strained lower back.

One batter after Nate Freiman walked to lead off the third, centerfielder Jake Blackwood hit a no-doubter deep over the left field wall to give the Missions a 3-0 lead. San Antonio added two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Jeudy Valdez and another RBI single by Altman, his second of three on the night.

The Roughriders responded with a rally of their own in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one. Missions' starter Hayden Beard pitched four scoreless innings to begin the game but gave up his four earned runs with one swing of the bat by Mike Olt who hit a grand slam to left field.

Four was the magic number for the Missions who hit four doubles and scored another four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Replacement catcher Robert Kral led off the inning with a double who proceeded to score on a Valdez ground-rule double. Altman drove in his third run of the game on a double to deep center. Two batters later, after a Dean Anna walk, his 38 for the season, DH Ali Solis hit a two-run double, bringing the score to 9-4.

Altman had another single in the eighth inning, ending the game 4-4 with 3 RBI's, his first career four hit game, and first career three RBI game. He had five hits and three RBI's for the season coming into the game.

The Missions head out of town for the next eight days, traveling to Corpus Cristi to play the Hooks, followed by a trip to Midland to face the Rockhounds. Starting pitchers for Sunday's game will be Josh Geer (1-1, 3.70 ERA) for San Antonio and Ross Seaton (4-3, 3.90 ERA) for Corpus.

You can catch all the Missions action on KKYX 680 AM, the home of Missions baseball with Roy Acuff and Mike Saeger. Follow the radio booth at @SAMissionsRadio for live, in-game updates, contests and more.
