Missions Complete Four-Run Deficit, Fall to Frisco in 12 Innings

SAN ANTONIO - After trailing 4-0, the San Antonio completed their largest comeback of the season and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Missions and RoughRiders then exchanged runs in the 10th and 11th innings and carried over into the 12th inning. The RoughRiders prevailed in a nearly four-hour game by a final score of 10-7.

Ryan Lillie was the starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. He allowed two runs in the score in the top of the first inning to the Frisco RoughRiders. Kellen Strahm began the game with a base hit to center field and then he successfully stole second base. Dustin Harris drew a walk to put two runners on base. Jonathan Ornelas drove in a run with a single to right field. On the play, Harris came around to score after a throwing error from Jorge Ona. Ona tried to throw out Harris at third base, but the ball hit Harris and rolled into foul territory allowing him to score. The Missions trailed 2-0.

The second inning saw the RoughRiders double their lead. Jax Biggers drew a lead-off walk and Josh Stowers quickly drove him in with a double to left field. Following the Stowers double, Lillie allowed an RBI double to Trey Hair to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Moises Lugo replaced Lillie on the mound following Hair's double.

Zak Kent was the starting pitcher for the Frisco RoughRiders. The right-hander tossed three scoreless innings while allowing just two base hits. He struck out three batters along the way before being replaced by Tai Tiedemann prior to the bottom of the fourth inning.

In relief of Lillie, Lugo kept the RoughRiders off the scoreboard. He allowed three walks but did not allow a base hit in his three innings of work. Lugo struck out three batters along the way before being relieved by Osvaldo Hernandez prior to the top of the fifth inning.

Frisco had an opportunity to extend their lead in the top of the fifth inning. With Hernandez on the mound, he retired the first two batters of the inning. Blaine Crim and J.P. Martinez hit back-to-back singles to continue the inning. David Garcia popped out in foul territory to end the inning. The Missions still trailed 4-0.

Fred Schlichtholz replaced Hernandez prior to the top of the seventh inning. The southpaw had to pitch out of a jam to keep the score where it was. After retiring the first batter of the inning, he allowed a triple to Dustin Harris. Jonathan Ornelas hit a ground ball to shortstop and Leyba was able to throw out Harris in between third base and home plate. Crim added a single to extend the inning. With two on and two outs, Martinez struck out to end the inning.

After two scoreless innings from Tiedemann and Grant Wolfram, the Missions scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Wolfram still in the game, Ona hit a one single before advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Seagle reached base on an infield single and Ona advanced to third base. Kelvin Melean drove in Ona with a sacrifice fly to center field. After walking Hollis, Wolfram was replaced by Fer Ozuna. With two runners on and two outs, Ozuna retired Leyba to end the inning. The Missions trailed 4-1.

The comeback attempt continued in the bottom of the ninth inning. Leyba started off the inning with a solo home run off Ozuna. Rodriguez followed that up with a base hit to left field. He came around to score on an RBI double from Webster Rivas. The Missions tied the game with an RBI single from Ornelas. Ornelas was replaced by Ripken Reyes as a pinch-runner. After striking out Ona, Ozuna was replaced by Grant Anderson. With two strikes in the count, Seagle hit a single to right field and Reyes moved to third base. Melean struck out swinging for out number two. Hollis stepped up to the plate with two runners in scoring position and two outs. Hollis flew out to end the inning. The two clubs headed to extra innings tied at 4-4.

Angel Felipe came on to pitch the top of the 10th inning for the Missions. David Garcia was the placed runner at second base. Biggers laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Garcia to third base. Josh Stowers drove in the go-ahead run with a single to center field. Stowers advanced into scoring position after stealing second base. Felipe threw a wild pitch which walked Trey Hair and allowed Stowers to advance to third base. The right-hander recovered and retired the final two batters of the inning. The Missions trailed 5-4.

Hollis was the placed runner at second base for the Missions in the bottom of the 10th inning. Anderson returned to the mound for the RoughRiders. Milona laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hollis to third base. Leyba tied the game with a line drive single to right field. Rodriguez grounded into force out and Leyba advanced to second base. Rivas popped out on the infield to end the inning. The two clubs headed to the 11th tied 5-5.

Felipe returned to the mound for the top of the 11th inning and Harris was the runner placed at second base. Ornelas struck out swinging to start the inning. Frisco regained the lead on an RBI double from Crim. Crim advanced to third base on a passed ball from Seagle. After allowing a walk, Felipe stopped the bleeding by retiring the final two batters. The Missions trailed 6-5.

Rivas was the placed runner at second base as Josh Smith came on to pitch for Frisco. Reyes laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Rivas to third base. Ona grounded out to second base and Reyes scored the tying run. The two clubs entered the 12th inning tied 6-6.

Mason Fox was the new pitcher for the Missions in the top of the 12th inning. Biggers was the placed runner at second base. Stowers regained the lead once again for Frisco with an RBI single to right field. Fox loaded the bases after allowing a single to Hair and a walk to Strahm. Harris drove in a run with a sacrifice fly with all the runners advancing a base. The Missions intentionally walked Ornelas to re-load the bases. The RoughRiders extended their lead on a sacrifice fly from Crim. On the play, Strahm came around to score on a throwing error from Milone after he made the catch on the sacrifice fly. San Antonio trailed 10-6.

In the bottom of the 12th inning, Smith returned to the mound and Seagle was placed at second base. Kelvin Melean hit a fly ball which allowed Seagle to advance to third base. Hollis drove in Seagle with a single to right field. Milone flew out for out number two and the Missions' last hope was Domingo Leyba. He flew out to end the game.

With the loss, San Antonio falls to 41-36 (overall), 3-7 (2nd half) on the season

The San Antonio Missions continue their six-game homestand with the Frisco RoughRiders on Saturday, July 9th. The Missions have not yet announced their starting pitcher for Saturday night. Right-hander Tim Brennan (1-3, 3.67) is scheduled to start for the RoughRiders. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
