Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Brett Dowdy smashed a three-run homer to lead the San Antonio Missions past Corpus Christi 7-6 Tuesday in the second-half opener at Whataburger Field before 6,744.
In the second, Brett Bonvechio wrapped his third home run in as many nights, a shot into the Apex Pool & Spa in right field to put the Missions up 1-0.
San Antonio played long ball again in the fourth. Nick Hundley deposited a first-pitch fastball into the Hooks bullpen for a 2-0 lead.
The Missions broke out for four runs off Hooks starter Ronnie Martinez in the fifth. Drew Macias lined a lead-off double down the right-field line. Mike Ekstrom laid down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by catcher Jeff Mackor, pushing Macias to third and allowing Ekstrom to reach.
Will Venable then looped a single to right field, scoring Macias for a 3-0 advantage. Dowdy, a late addition to the lineup, then blasted a three-run shot onto the berm in left.
Corpus Christi responded with a five-run rally to chase Ekstrom. Beau Torbert, Jeff Mackor and Edwin Maysonet singled consecutively to open the inning. Neil Sellers, pinch-hitting for Martinez, walked with the bases loaded for the Hooks' first run. Drew Sutton and Todd Self contributed run-scoring singles and Jonny Ash a fielder's choice RBI. An error by Missions shortstop Sean Kazmar accounted for the other run.
Martinez (3-7) allowed eight hits, five earned runs and struck out two in five innings. Josh Muecke and Josh Miller teamed to allow one run and three hits in four innings.
Ekstrom was responsible for six hits, five runs, two walks and one strikeout in four-plus innings.
A two-out RBI single by Peter Ciofrone gave San Antonio a two-run cushion at 7-5 in the seventh.
The Hooks grabbed a run back in the eighth when Mackor moved home on Ash's bases-loaded chopper inside the bag at third. Ciofrone, the Missions left fielder, threw Sutton out at third base before Maysonet was able to score the tying run.
Dirk Hayhurst (3-0) picked up the victory with two scoreless innings. He gave up three hits and struck out two. Paul Abraham earned his sixth save by working the ninth.
The clubs meet Wednesday with Chance Douglass (5-2) facing San Antonio southpaw Sean Thompson (4-6).
