Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals fell for the third straight night, dropping a 9-5 decision to the Arkansas Travelers at Hammons Field on Tuesday evening. Since clinching their first-ever pennant, the Cards have dropped three of four, including three straight to open the current eight-game home stand.
Cards' starter Adam Daniels, making his Double-A debut after being called up from Palm Beach of the Florida State League, struggled in his first start for Springfield. Daniels (0-1) allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five men, including the side in the first inning, while allowing three walks.
Aaron Peel and Michael Collins had back-to-back doubles with two outs in the second, giving Arkansas a 1-0 lead on Collins' RBI double.
The Cards tied it at 1-1 in the second against Arkansas starter Fernando Rodriguez, as Juan Richardson crushed his tenth homer of the year to left field.
The Travs took the lead for good in the third, as Greg Porter's two-run double capped a three-run inning, giving Arkansas a 4-1 advantage.
Springfield tallied a pair of runs to pull to within one at 4-3 in the third. Jarrett Hoffpauir homered to right field, his fifth of the year to make it 4-2. Bryan Anderson's two-out single plated Colby Rasmus, as Springfield made it 4-3.
Daniels left with one out in the sixth, after loading the bases. Nick Webber came out of the pen and gave up a two-run double to Cody Fuller, as the Travs went up 6-3. Arkansas got two more in the eighth against Cards' reliever Michael Cooper, then one in the ninth on a Sean Rodriguez solo homer off of Kevin Ool, taking a 9-3 lead.
The Cards got a pair in the bottom of the ninth against Travs' reliever Chris Saenz, as Bryan Anderson collected his fourth hit of the game, a two-run single to round out the scoring at 9-5.
Travs' starter Fernando Rodriguez (4-1) got the win, allowing three runs on ten hits over six innings.
Springfield opens the second half with a loss, going to 0-1 in the second half and 36-32 overall. The Cards look to avoid the sweep on Wednesday night, sending Mitchell Boggs (6-3) to the mound against Travelers' right-hander Amalio Diaz (0-2).
