Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
(LAKELAND, FL) - The Lakeland Flying Tigers jumped out on top early on Monday night, and never looked back as they posted a 4-2 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle. Lakeland has now won the first two games of this four-game series, and the Miracle have now dropped three straight games overall.
The Flying Tigers opened the scoring in the second inning on a leadoff homerun to left field by Zach Shepherd, and then added two more insurance runs in the fifth on a one-out, two-run single by Wade Hinkle.
Hinkle struck again in the sixth with an RBI single to give his team a 4-0 advantage. For the game, Shepherd and Hinkle, the Flying Tigers number eight and nine hitters, combined for five of their teams' nine hits and drove in all four of their runs.
The Miracle pushed across their only run of the evening in the seventh. Joe Maloney reached on a throwing error to start the frame, and then, following a pair of walks, came in to score on a ground out off the bat of Alex Perez.
Jeff Thompson (4-1) was the starting and winning pitcher for Lakeland. He tossed five-and-one-third innings, allowing three hits and no runs while walking three and striking out five. Starter Randy LeBlanc (0-2) suffered the loss for the Miracle
The Miracle (30-33) and Flying Tigers (32-30) will play the third game of this four-game set on Tuesday night. The first pitch at historic Henley Field in Lakeland will take place at 6:00 p.m. The game will not be broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com.
